Wheeling, W. Va. - Coming off the momentum of a big dual meet win on Wednesday night against Frostburg State, the Wheeling University Wrestling team is riding the momentum. On Thursday, the team announced that they will be canceling their trip to the Ohio Collegiate Open at Case Western Reserve, originally scheduled for Sunday, November 9th. With a busy early season schedule, that included five events in the span of two weeks.
The Cardinals are coming off a hard fought dual meet victory in which they earned their first ever victory over Frostburg State. Wheeling started the day off strong with a pin by Neal Krysty in the 125lb weight class, and kept the success rolling throughout the night. The Cardinals would win five of the 10 matches of the dual, with the lightweights winning three of the first four matches. The Cardinals were out to a 13-5 advantage, but the Bobcats battled back in the midweights, eventually overtaking the Cardinals at 15-13 with three straight wins. They would split the first two heavyweight classes, with Wheeling winning at 184 and Frostburg State winning at 197 and it all came down to the final bout. Gavin Harper would come in for the heavyweights and controlled the match through the first minute. He would end up earning the pin at the 1:16 mark and the Cardinals would earn six points as they took down Frostburg State 23-18.
The Wheeling University Wrestling team returns to action on Wednesday, November 12th, when they host Washington & Jefferson in dual meet action at 7 PM.
