Wheeling W.V - The Wheeling University Women's Basketball team (1-1) continues their home stretch against the University of Pittsburgh Johnsontown (0-2). This past weekend they lost a heartbreaker against California (PA) 63-62 and had a big win against Edinboro 70-56 the next day.
On Friday against Cal-U, Wheeling led most of the game but a 10-2 run by Cal-U in the middle of the 4th quarter gave them a lead that they would not give up. Graci Fairman got the season going for the Cardinals, making three 3 pointers in the first quarter. It was a tight game throughout with 7 lead changes and 8 ties. Kenzie Dalton went into take over mode in the late 3rd quarter and into the 4th scoring 17 points in a row. Ultimately, the offense stalled and Wheeling was not able to come away with the win.
It was the defense that shined on Saturday against Edinboro, only allowing 19 points in the first half. Kenzie Dalton had a double double with 10 rebounds and a career high 28 points while adding 7 assists. Dalton is now 6th in division 2 in assists per game. 10 Cardinals saw action on Saturday and the team had a good shooting night all around at 45.3 / 36.8 / 78.9 for the game.
Last year these two teams matched up in Johnstown, the Cardinals came away with a 65-50 victory. Former Cardinal, Rachel Wilson led the way with a double double that night. Wheeling is 11-9 all-time against UPJ and 6-3 at home. It looks to be a tightly contested game as Wheeling has played well in both their games this season and UPJ is coming off two close losses to high quality MEC opponents.
Tipoff is scheduled for Wednesday November 19th at 5:30 PM in the Alma Grace McDonough Center on the campus of Wheeling University. You can watch the game live HERE and follow along with live stats HERE.
