Satyal Stops 11 in Loss to Concord

Athens, W. Va- The Wheeling University Women's Soccer team (2-5-3), (1-3-3) took on the Concord Mountains earlier this afternoon in a highly defensive battle. Despite the Mountain Lions peppering 11 shots at redshirt sophomore Deetya Satyal, only one managed to squeak through as the Cardinals fell 1-0.

Satyal knew what to expect when she was given the nod to start in net: shots, and lots of them. The first shot on net came in the third minute of play, another four minutes later, and then one more five minutes later. The Mountain Lions set themselves up comfortably in the Cardinals' end around the 25th minute, but the efforts of the defense forced away their four shots taken. Caley Rosie looked to change the pace for her team with a shot, but the Concord defense pushed it off target. When the Mountain Lions pushed back to the other side of the field in the dying minutes of the first half, Concord's Marika Svensson fired a shot on net, and while Satyal made the first stop, she was unable to corral it and Mia Cook jumped on the loose ball to score as time expired.

Concord was eager to extend their lead in the opening of the second half, however, three stops from Satyal in the opening 10 minutes would put a damper on those plans. Freshman Talia Salvador found herself with a chance to tie the match up in the 72nd minute. She took the shot, but it was picked up by the Concord goalkeeper and put back into the possession of the Mountain Lions. A corner kick opportunity in the 75th minute resulted in another save having to be made by Satyal. Concord tried for two more shots, but they were forced wide of the net. Two more corner kicks came in the final five minutes of play and of the four shots that were directed towards Satyal, she only had to make one save as the others soared out right.

In the 1-0 loss, Deetya Satyal saw 29 shots and recorded 11 saves. Talia Salvador took the only shot on goal while her and Caley Rosie registered a shot each.

The Wheeling University Women's Soccer team returns home to host the University of Charleston on Sunday, October 12th, 2025, at 4pm.
