Athens, WV- The Wheeling University Men's Soccer team (1-7-1), (0-6-1) headed down to Athens for a game against the Concord Mountain Lions (8-2), (6-2). This comes two weeks after a tightly contested Mountain Lion victory in Wheeling . Despite Wheeling getting on the board first, Concord was able to score back quickly, and then twice more to give them a 3-1 victory.
Pablo Prieto, who is a staple of the Cardinal defense, scored his second goal of the season in the 22nd minute giving Wheeling a 1-0 lead early in the game. The goal came shortly after a shot on goal by Davin Starkie. Within 6 minutes Concord answered back with a goal by Dominique Malhomme thanks to a Wheeling foul setting Concord up with a penalty kick for a high quality look. Wheeling goalie Diego Marquez played his first game since getting a little banged up last time against Concord, and shortly before halftime made a big save to keep the score 1-1 going into the half.
Concord made a couple halftime adjustments and scored 4 minutes into the second half making it 2-1 Mountain Lions in the 49th minute. In the 75th minute Marquez came up with another save, but in the 83rd minute Concord was able to put another ball in the back of the net. This was Concord's second goal tonight off of a penalty kick. Wheeling was able to get one more shot on goal before time expired but it wasn't enough as it was saved, and the final score was 3-1 Concord.
Wheeling will return home this Sunday, October 12, to face Charleston with kickoff at 1pm.
