Wheeling, WV- The Wheeling Men's Soccer team (1-7-1, 0-6-1) heads to Athens to take on Concord (7-2, 5-2) for the second time in as many weeks. It is one of their 3 remaining road games this season, and a big one as they hope to avenge their tightly contested loss at home two weeks ago.
This is Wheeling's second consecutive game against a team in the top 3 of the MEC standings. On Sunday they traveled to Davis & Elkins where they were stymied 4-0 by a Senators squad who has defeated their opponents 7-1 in their last two games. The fancy footed freshman Elie Simon had one shot as well as subs Josh D'oyen-Fitchett and Aiden Morales. Simon was one of 5 players who played 74 minutes or more. Luis Bravo logged 74 minutes as well, Alex Yesufu played 76, and Pablo Prieto and Daniel Delo led the way with 90 minutes played.
Prieto has been the backbone of the Wheeling defense. He has played all 90 minutes in all but one game, which was in the first game of the season where he still played in 90% of the game. Preito, a Sophomore, cemented his role in the backline as a Freshman. He started the season splitting time but showed his worth and played all 900 minutes in the final 10 games. Prieto is known for his stern defensive play but is able to do it all, he leads the Cardinals in goals scored as well.
The Cardinals have scored 100% of their conference points on the road this season. The Cardinals are 7 points out of 6th place. This week provides two huge opportunities to turn some heads as they play both of the top 2 teams in the conference this week. This week will look to be a slingshot for the Cardinals and put the league on notice,
The Matchup
These teams are going into their 25th all time matchup. Concord has won the last 4 but Wheeling is 9-3-2 all time on the road in Athens. This is currently the longest losing streak between these two teams so history would give the edge to Wheeling to break that streak.
The streak was nearly broken two weeks ago in Wheeling where Concord pulled out a 1-0 victory where both teams had 9 shots, 4 saves, and 4 corner kicks. The game did get chippy with 15 total penalties so that will be something to watch for tonight if the emotions carry over from last match.
