Glenville, WV- The Wheeling University Volleyball team (11-11), (7-2) headed south these past 2 days for a couple south division matchups. Today's contest was against Glenville State (10-14), (2-7), and yesterday's was against Concord University. It was a dominant couple days down south for Wheeling winning both games 3-1.
The first set was highly contested. There were 5 lead changes during this first set and neither team was able to take more than a 3 point lead. Wheeling had its highest attack percentage of the night in the first set, coming in at .298 . Despite only 4 errors on the set for each team, Wheeling closed the set cleaner. Glenville State had 2 errors of the final 3 points and an Olivia Batch Kill finished off the first set. The second set was a different story. Glenville had its highest attack percentage of the night at .333, and Wheeling had their lowest. Glenville was able to come out to an early 7-2 lead and did not give up the lead again this set.
The rest of the night was all Wheeling. Wheeling outscored Glenville State 50-31 in the final 2 sets, with a 25-17 victory in the 3rd set and a 25-14 victory to put an exclamation point on the night. The Pioneers were actually able to start with a 4-1 lead in the third set. Wheeling would then win 5 of the next 6 points and did not give up the lead after that. Their biggest lead of the set was 9 points at 20-11 and 22-13. The final set Wheeling would come out to an 8-2 lead and quell any idea of a Glenville State comeback. Faith Keifer led the Cardinals in the final set with 14 assists, as many points as the Pioneers scored, and assisted on each of the Cardinals final 5 points.
Faith Keifer's strong finish would propel her to lead the Cardinals with 30 assists on the night. Her counterpart, Lexi Duplessis, would finish right behind her with 24 assists. Katie Wilking, Camryn Matus, and Olivia Batch would all finish with double digit kills at 15, 12, and 11 respectively. Megan Platt would lead the way in the digs column with 21, Olivia Batch had 20, and Camryn Matus had 19. Olivia Batch would finish the night with a double double.
The Wheeling University Volleyball team returns to action on Tuesday, October 28th, when they hosts Fairmont State inside the Alma Grace McDonough center with first serve at 7 PM
