Murfreesboro, TN. – As April kicked off, the run towards the Collegiate Rugby Championships (CRC) is in full swing. The Wheeling University Rugby team went to their third tournament of the 7's season on Saturday, as they competed at the Moosemen 7's hosted by Middle Tennessee State. For the third time this season, the Cardinals would take home a tournament championship, going 3-0-1 on the day, and taking down Southern Virginia University in back-to-back games to claim the title.
The Cardinals would begin the Division I bracket pool play taking on Louisville. After picking up a win in each of their first 12 games of the 7's season, the Cardinals would face their toughest test with the Cardinals. The two teams would end locked in a 10-10 tie as the Cardinals went 0-0-1 to start the day. With the top seed receiving a bye to the semifinal round, the Cardinal's offense would look to get going. They had their biggest offensive output of the day in their second game against Dayton, putting up 51 points in what would be a 51-7 win for their first win of the day. They would wrap up pool play against Southern Virginia University, and earned a 28-14 win to move to 2-0-1 through three pool games. They would head to the championships where they once again matched up with Southern Virginia University.
It would be a battle for the Cardinals, as they gave up the most points they would give up the second most points of the day with 12. However, the offense responded, scoring 34 of their own as the Cardinals won 34-12. As a team, the Cardinals combined to score 123 points across the four games and keep their unbeaten streak alive, sitting at 14-0-1 on the 7's season. The offense was led by
Aaron Juma, who played nearly every minute of the game and was a big contributor for the team. Shadreck Mendaza continued his strong start to the spring 7's season, sitting as the second leading scorer for the team. However, when the team needed a spark, they got it from Joseph Iye, who came through with several strong pushes on the night.
The Wheeling University Rugby team has one final regular season 7's tournament as they compete for the Big Rivers Rugby Conference (BRRC) Championship. They return to action on Saturday April 13th, as they head to the BRRC 7's Tournament hosted by Marian University.
