Washington, PA. – The Wheeling University Baseball team (18-13, 8-8) finally got the chance to wrap up their opening weekend series as they headed to Wild Things Park to take on CAL-U on Wednesday. The rescheduling served as the Cardinal's midweek game and the Cardinals got to get a lot of different players playing time. However, they were not able to overcome the Vulcans as they fell 11-1 to fall to 0-3 against CAL-U this season.
Carson Ashby would get the start and was one of seven Cardinals to take the mound on the day. He got into some trouble in the first, but was able to work out of it before facing just four batters in the bottom of the second to keep the game scoreless after two. However, the Vulcans would be the first to get on the board as they put a three-spot up in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead. Ashby would last 2.1 innings, allowing the three runs, two earned, on two hits while walking one and striking out one. With CAL-U getting their offense, it was time for Wheeling to respond and they did just that in the top of the fourth. The inning was started by Nic Ancelet, who was hit by a pitch to start things and then stole second to give Wheeling a runner in scoring position with one out.
Two batters later,
Christian Boyles would step in and delivered on a two-out RBI single that scored Ancelet and made it a 3-1 Vulcan lead.
Ethan Wendell, who came in relief of Ashby in the third, threw a scoreless fourth, and finished going 1.2 innings of shutout ball, allowing two hits while striking out one. The Vulcans offense has been one of the strongest in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference throughout the year, and they showed that Wednesday. They scored five runs over the next two innings and made it an 8-1 CAL-U lead. They added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth and brought the game to its final score of 11-1.
Noah Zenkewich and
Dylan Maltby would each throw scoreless outings to wrap up the day as the Cardinals would try to put together one more push in the ninth. However, they would go 1-2-3 in the final inning and fell 11-1.
The offense was led by
Christian Boyles, who drove in the only RBI of the day for the Cardinals, while finishing 1-3. Nic Ancelet would continue his recent string of success, going 1-2 with a run scored and a stolen base on the day. Ancelet upped his current rub to 7-14 over the last five games and has found his swing.
Aidan Willard and
Drew Sefsick would round out the offense with the final two hits of the day for the offense.
The Wheeling University Baseball team returns to action on Saturday, April 13th, when they host Frostburg State with first pitch at 1 PM.
