Baseball Splits Season Series with Ohio Dominican in 12-3 Win

Columbus, OH. The Wheeling University Baseball team (13-9, 3-5) headed to Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday to wrap up their season series with Ohio Dominican. After dropping an offensive battle at home a week ago, the Cardinal bats came to life as they split the season series with an 11-3 win. Ohio Dominican got on the board early, but the Cardinal bullpen was able to shut them down over the final seven innings, allowing just one unearned run.

Early on, Ohio Dominican would get the scoring started with runs in the first and second inning, as they took a 2-0 lead after two innings. Jagger Iovinelli would put the first zero of the game on the board in the bottom of the third, allowing one hit and one walk in his inning of work. The Cardinals offense would then respond in the top of the fourth, as Scott Kondroik doubled to start things off. A flyout by Thomas Kegerreis advanced the runner to third and Spencer Craig would add a flyout to bring him home and cut the Ohio Dominican lead to 2-1. They continued that success into the top of the fifth as Carlos D'Amato started things with a bang. He lifted a solo shot to left to start the inning and tied the game at 2-2.

Two batters later, the Cardinals got their second home run of the inning after a Kaleb Scull walk with one out. Braden Killens would step in and launched his sixth home run of the year, a two run shot, and the Cardinals had their first lead of the day at 4-2. Ohio Dominican got a run back in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 4-3 game, but once the offense got started it wouldn't stop. The Cardinals scored at least one run in each of the final six innings of play. The top of the sixth would start with a single by Bode Stewart and a D'Amato walk. Aidan Willard would then lay down a sacrifice bunt to move runners to second and third and a pair of sacrifice flies from Scull and Killens would up the Cardinal lead to 6-3 after six innings.

The top of the seventh got started with a two-out walk from Christian Boyles. Sammy Kondroik would single and Nic Ancelet was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Willard would bring home the first run of the inning via a hit-by pitch and Scull delivered a two RBI double that took the Wheeling advantage to 9-3. The Cardinals would get two runs in the top of the eighth on a two-run home run from Thomas Kegerreis and the top of the ninth would see the final Cardinal run come home on a sacrifice fly from Killens. It brought the game to its final score of 12-3 and Carson Ashby would throw a 1-2-3 inning to round out the game. It was a strong showing from the Cardinal bullpen, who did not allow an earned run over the final seven innings.

It started with Iovinelli's scoreless inning and Derrick Goutremout would add 2.0 innings allowing the one unearned run on one hit while striking out one. Noah Zenkewich threw a scoreless sixth, allowing one hit while walking one and striking out one, Dominic Parker added two scoreless, allowing two hits, a walk, and three strikeouts, and Ashby finished things out with his 1-2-3 inning. The offense was led by Braden Killens, who finished 3-5 with a home run and four RBI, giving him six RBI over his last five games. Kaleb Scull finished right behind him, finishing 1-3 with three RBI, and Thomas Kegerreis added a home run and two RBI to round out the day.

The Wheeling University Baseball team returns to action on Friday, March 29th, when they host Concord at 1 PM.
