Baseball Wrapped Up Wilson Weekend with Offensive Breakout

Wilson, NC. – On Sunday, the Wheeling University Baseball team (8-3, 0-0) wrapped up their weekend in Wilson, North Carolina with one final battle with Glenville State. The offense had their biggest outburst of the weekend as they put up 16 runs and took down the Pioneers 16-11. It was the fourth time this season that the Cardinals have scored 10 or more runs in a game this season as their offense continues to lead the way.

After Kenny Jinks held the Pioneers off the board in the top of the first, the Cardinal's offense got going on the bottom half. Aidan Willard would start the inning with a double and a single by Christian Boyles would put runners on the corners with nobody out. Two batters later, Spencer Craig would step up with two runners in scoring position with two outs. He came through with a two RBI double that got the Cardinals out to a 2-0 lead. Glenville State would respond with two runs of their own in the top of the second and the game sat tied at 2-2. The score would remain 2-2 until the bottom of the third when Braden Killens and Dylan Maltby would hit back-to-back singles with one out. Craig would then get on base with a fielder's choice and runners would be on the corners with two away. Wheeling would steal their third run of the day as Craig took off for second to draw the throw. When the Catcher threw the ball to second, Braden Killens scampered home and the Cardinals had a 3-2 lead.

Glenville State would tie the game once again in the top of the fourth, but as they did all game the Cardinals once again had an answer. Wheeling would load the bases with one out in the top of the fourth as Thomas Kegerreis singled and Kaleb Skull walked to put runners at first and second with one out. Willard would then step in and singled home Kegerreis and the Cardinals were back in front with a 4-3 advantage. Boyles then stepped on and grounded into a fielder's choice that brought home Skull and the Cardinals were up 5-3 after four innings of play. Jinks would throw a scoreless frame in the top of the fifth and the Cardinals broke the game open in the bottom half of the inning. Craig would single to start the inning before a Scott Kondroik double put runners on second and third with nobody out.

Kegerreis would pick up the first RBI of the with a single and the Cardinals were ahead 6-3. Scull would then be hit by a pitch to load the bases and a string of bases loaded walks would begin. Ancelet and Willard drew back-to-back bases loaded walks to make it 8-3 and two batters later, Killens would unload the bases. He came through with a based clearing double that brought home all three runs and the Cardinals were staked to an 11-3 lead. Maltby would be hit by a pitch and Craig followed with a single to load the bases once again before Kondroik would draw the third bases loaded walk of the inning to make it a 12-3 game. A groundout by Kegerreis would make it 13-3 and a Scull walk had the bases loaded again. A bases loaded hit by pitch, a bases loaded walk, and an RBI single by Boyles would end the 11-run inning for the Cardinals and staked them to a 16-3 lead.

Jinks pitched to the first three batters of the new inning before giving way to Dominic Parker-McDonald and the Cardinals bullpen. Jinks would end up being tagged for five runs in five innings of work on five hits while walking five and striking out four. Parker-McDonald would nearly get out of the inning with a clean slate, picking up a double play against the first batter he faced, but two Pioneer runs would score in the inning, putting an end to Jinks's day. Parker-McDonald would end up working 2.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out three, and Ethan Wendell and  Carson Ashby would throw the final two innings of work. The Pioneers made a valiant comeback effort, scoring eight runs over the final four innings but the Cardinals were able to hold on as they picked up a 16-11 win to finish 3-0 during their weekend in North Carolina.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was Braden Killens, who finished 4-6 with a double, three RBI, and two runs scored. The other Cardinal to hit the three-RBI plateau was Aidan Willard, who added a 2-4 effort with two walks and three RBI. Christian Boyles, Nic Ancelet, Thomas Kegerreis, and Spencer Craig each added two RBI on the afternoon as they rounded out a strong day for the Cardinals offense. The MEC's best batting average team continued to hit the ball well, picking up 18 hits and drawing six walks on the day as they picked up the victory.

The Wheeling University Baseball team returns to action on Wednesday, Marcy 13th, when they take on Clarion at Bethany College with first pitch at 1:30 PM.
