Athens, W. Va. – The final two weeks of the regular season kicked off on Wednesday night as the Wheeling University Women's Basketball team (16-9, 11-7) hit the road to face Concord. The Cardinals had a strong showing in the first half, but it wouldn't be enough as the Cardinals fell to the Mountain Lions 74-71. With the loss, the Cardinals enter their final two conference games in a battle for a first round bye, with the top seven spots in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) all separated by just three games.
Throughout the night, the Cardinals were efficient from the floor, shooting 45% or better in each of the four quarters. They got things started with a
Briarley Rogers layup to take a 2-0 lead. It would start a small run for the Cardinals right from the get-go, as they scored six of the first eight points of the game as they built a 6-2 lead at the 7:31 mark of the first. However, Concord came charging right back, and made it an 8-6 game at the 6:31 mark. The back and forth would be indictive of how the entire game would go with the Cardinals and Mountain Lions trading blows.
Shamia Strayhorn would hit a layup that gave Wheeling an 11-6 lead at the media timeout, and started what would be a big day for the junior. As the quarter came to an end, Concord was able to battle back and equal Wheeling's effort as the score sat tied at 15-15 after one quarter.
The second quarter would start with a Concord three-pointer and they used that to build their first lead of the night. They pushed it to as much as 25-17 over the first four minutes of the quarter, and the Cardinals were looking to break the run. They would do just that with a pair of free throws from Strayhorn and a Rogers three-pointer would follow as the Cardinals cut the score to 25-22. They would keep the run going over the next three minutes as they totaled a 12-0 run as they flipped the script taking a 29-25 lead. Concord would battle back to make it a one-point game at 31-30 with two minutes to go as the Cardinals defense kicked them down for the rest of the half. Strayhorn would add a layup and
Kadie Colebank added a layup of her own and the Cardinals would head into the locker room with a 35-30 lead.
As the second half got started, the Cardinals would keep the run going as they scored six of the first nine points of the quarter. Concord started things with a jumper, but
Rachel Wilson would get the Cardinals on the board with a layup. When the run was done, the Cardinals held their biggest advantage of the night, leading 41-33 with 7:30 left in the quarter. The Cardinals would push that lead to double digits with another Wilson layup and a three-pointer from Rogers that built a 46-35 lead. By the media timeout, Strayhorn would add another layup and the Cardinals had a 48-41 lead with 4:48 to go. However, Concord d would hit their stride by quarter's end, going on a 9-2 run over the final 4:48 and the game was tied at 50-50 with 13 seconds to go. Colebank would add one more layup before the buzzer and the Cardinals would carry a 52-50 lead heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter would once again see the Cardinals get off to a hot start as
Bryana Henderson hit a layup and another Rogers three made it a 57-50 game. As has been the case for the entire game, Concord would battle back and as the final media timeout ticked away, the score sat at 63-62. It came in the middle of what was an 11-0 Mountain Lion run as they took their first lead since the first half at 69-63. Strayhorn would hit a layup and completed the three-point play with a free throw to break the run.
Jacqui Hinesmon would add a layup of her own and with 1:58 to play it was a 69-68 affair. Concord would go 3-4 from the free throw line and, with three seconds to go, Strayhorn hit a three that made it 72-71. A foul on the next possession would result in two Concord free throws and the Cardinals had one more three before time expired but it missed the mark and the Cardinals would fall 74-71.
Leading the way for the Cardinals was junior
Shamia Strayhorn, who finished the day with 24 points to tie her career high. She would finish shooting 9-16 (56.25%) from the floor and 1-3 from three-point range as she rounded out a strong day. The other Cardinal to finish with double digit points was
Briarley Rogers, who led the way with three three-pointers on the night and 13 points in the game.
Kenzie Dalton would round out the day, leading both the defensive and the passing game with eight rebounds and six assists. As a team, the Cardinals shot 50% from the floor and added a 41.7% mark from three-point range as they rounded out the effort.
