Athens, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Men's Basketball team (8-16, 5-13) hit the road on Wednesday night as they took on Concord in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play. As a team, the Cardinals had four different players hit double figures on the day, but it wasn't enough as they fell 98-70. Despite the loss, the Cardinals were still able to clinch their spot in the 2024 MEC Tournament as West Virginia Wesleyan fell to the University of Charleston as the Cardinals will return to the WesBanco Arena.
Leading the way for the Cardinals was junior
Sean Ealy, who finished with 15 points on the night. Ealy would shoot just over 46% on the night as he led the Cardinals in scoring for the third time this season. Early on, Ealy would hit a three-pointer to get the Cardinals started, but was held to just five points during the first 20 minutes of play. Ealy would go 2-5 from the floor in that first half, but as the second half started, Ealy would turn things on. He would score 10 of his 15 points over the final 20 minutes of play as he scored just under a third of his team's second half points. His efficiency was much better during that second half, as he went 4-6 from the floor and added a 2-2 mark from the free throw line. Ealy has stepped up at point guard for the Cardinals over the last several weeks and looks to continue to lead the Cardinals this season.
The team's most efficient shooter of the night was Ter Harris, who was the second Cardinal to hit double digits in the game. Harris would shoot 4-6 (66.7%) from the floor on the night, and added a 2-3 (66.7%) from beyond the arc. Both of those three-pointers would come in the first four minutes of the game as he helped the Cardinals get out to an 11-10 lead. Harris has been a spark plug for the Cardinals all season long and he sparked them against Concord. Harris has been on fire for the Cardinals as of late, averaging 12.86 points per game over the past seven games, as he has taken advantage of his new starting role. He hit double figures for the sixth time during that seven-game stretch as he continues to play big under the net for the Cardinals.
William Gabbert was the third Cardinal to hit double figures, finishing with 12 points on the night. Gabbert would finish 5-10 (50%) from the floor and tied Harris for the team lead with two three-pointers, going 2-4 from beyond the arc. Like Ealy, Gabbert came on strong at the end of the first half, scoring seven of his 12 points during the final seven minutes of the first half. The 12 points was the most put up by Gabbert since he had 13 points against Concord in the last meeting between the two teams back on January 20th as he has taken on a role off the bench for the Cardinals down the stretch. Gabbert has been a strong asset for the Cardinals to go to off the bench and looks to continue that success as the team prepared for the 2024 MEC Tournament.
The final Cardinal to hit double digits on the day was
Marcus Johnson, who just scored the 1,000th points of his career last time out. Johnson finished with 11 points on the night as he rounded out the effort . Like Gabbert, Johnson's biggest success also came during the first half, when he put up seven of his 11 points. The Cardinals were able to shoot 41.67% from the floor during those first 20 minutes of play as the Cardinals pushed to keep pace with the high-powered Concord offense. Over the second half, the Cardinals would reach into their depth, as they cleared the bench over the final five minutes of play as they got experience against one of the top teams in the MEC. In the end, it wasn't enough as the Cardinals fell to Concord 98-70 as they prepare to head back home for a weekend meeting.
The Wheeling University Men's Basketball team returns to action on Saturday, February 24th, when they take on Glenville State with tip-off at 4 PM.
