Offense Continues to Score as Wheeling Softball Drops Doubleheader to Seton Hill

Greensburg, PA. - The Wheeling University Softball te (1-5, 0-0) continued their run through the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) as they took on Seton Hill in doubleheader action on Tuesday. The offense continues to score runs and create opportunities, combining for 10 runs between the two games, but they would end up being swept on the day. Through their first six games of the season, the Cardinals have scored four or more runs three times and they kept that up today, falling by scores of 10-3 and 18-7.

Game One: Seton Hill 10, Wheeling 3

In the first game, the Cardinals came out looking to rebound from their doubleheader against IUP. Early on, it was the Vulcan offense that got going with four runs in the first two innings of play. Wheeling would get their first run in the top of the fourth after Cassie Feyh reached on a one-out single. After the second out of the inning, Katie Sare would draw a big two-out walk and a wild pitch would advance Feyh to third, putting runners on the corners and two outs. Anna Florczak would then step in and lined an RBI single to left to score Feyh and make it a 4-1 game. Chyla Miller would check in to run for Sare with runners once again at the corners, but they would be stranded their with the Cardinals cutting the lead to three. Seton Hill added four more in the bottom of the inning, but the Cardinals continued to battle in the top of the fourth.

This time, it would be Grace Mummery who got the offense started with a double to left center on the first pitch of the inning. Makie Paxson would follow with a single that moved Mummery to third and a bunt single from Maddie Munoz would load the bases with nobody out. Jenna Hollerich would then step in and lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Mummery and made it an 8-2 game. The inning would end with just the one run, but the Cardinals were back on the board in the top of the sixth. With two outs in the inning, Madison George would step in for her first at-bat of the 2024 season. She would start things with a bang, lifting her first home run of the year to left center to make it an 8-3 game. However, the final two runs of the game would come from Seton Hill as they went on to win 10-3.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was Cassie Feyh, who put together a three-hit game, going 3-4 with a run scored. Feyh has been a consistent bat at the top of the lineup in the early going and looks to continue that momentum through the season. Madison George would hit the line home run of the day in her only at-bat and Anna Florczak added a multi-hut effort, going 2-4 with an RBI on the night. The final RBI would come from Jenna Hollerich as she lifted the sacrifice fly for the final run. The Cardinals looked to bounce back as they headed to game two of the day.

Game Two: Seton Hill 18, Wheeling 7

Game Two of the day saw the Cardinal's offense come to life, eclipsing the four run mark for the third time this season. Their success started right away as they took their first lead of the day in the top of the first. After a groundout to start the inning, Grace Mummery would single and Cassie Feyh doubled to put runners at second and third with one out. It brought up freshman Madison Kay, who lifted a deep fly ball to center field. However, it was able to be corralled and Mummery scored on the sacrifice fly to give Wheeling a 1-0 lead. The inning would end with a groundout and a four-spot by the Griffins in the bottom of the inning flipped the score to a 4-1 Seton Hill advantage heading into the second.

However, Wheeling was back on the board in the top of the second after Jenna Hollerich reached on a one-out double. After a lineout for out number two, Makie Paxson would come through with a two-out RBI single that brought home Hollerich and made it a 4-2 game. Seton Hill would continue to push runs across over the next three innings, putting up six unanswered runs that moved things to a 10-2 affair heading to the top of the sixth. The inning would start with an error that allowed Florczak to get to second base and after one out, it would be another Griffin error that brought the run home. Natalie Stoner would reach on an error by the Seton Hill first baseman, and Florczak would scamper home from second to make it a 10-3 game.

However, the potent Seton Hill offense continues it's run in the bottom of the fourth with eight runs that put the mercy rule in effect heading to the top of the 5th. With the game on the line, the Cardinals would try to battle to stay alive as Feyh singled to start the inning. Madison George would add one with a one-out double down the left field line that had runners on second and third with one out. Anna Florczak would reach first on a single to load the bases and Jenna Hollerich would come through. She lined a two-RBI single to right center scoring Feyh and George for the fourth and fifth Cardinal runs of the game. After the second out, Paxson would duplicate the effort with a two-RBI single of her own that made it an 18-7 game. However, that is where things would end as the mercy rule ended the game after 4.5 innings.

The Cardinals were led on the day by Jenna Hollerich and Makie Paxson, who each finished going 2-3 with two RBI. Both players picked up their two RBI as part of the team's five run rally in the top of the fifth as they tried to keep the game alive. Cassie Feyh had another three-hit game, going 3-3, and finished 6-7 across the two games. The final three RBI of the day came from Maddie Munoz, Madison Kay, and Natalie Stoner who each added an RBI on the day.
