Wheeling Wrestling Has Two Place Third at JCU Open

University Heights, OH. – The Wheeling University Wrestling team continued the road to the NCAA Super Regionals on Sunday as they headed to the JCU Open. The Cardinals had one of their best showings of the season, with two players at the event as they finished 9-6 across their 15 matches on the day. Caden Canning would take third in the 149 lb weight class and Zach Larue would add a third place finish at 141 lb to lead the Cardinals.

It would be Canning who finished with the best record on the team, going 4-1 across five matches on the day. He started his day with a Tech Fall win over West Liberty's Lucas Zombotti (17-0) and advanced to the second round of the bracket. He would add his second win of the day, beating unattached wrestler Joey Fumic in an 11-7 decision. He would take his only loss of the night in the quarterfinal round when he was pinned by John Carroll's Kyle Bizjak (2:26)  and moved to the consolation bracket. He would take on Gannon's Ryan Massengale and made his way to the third place match with a pin at the 2:22 mark. There, he would rematch with Fumic and ended the day with a 17-1 tech fall victory to claim his highest individual finish of the season at third place.

The other third place finisher was Zach Larue, who returned to the 141-lb weight class after missing the last several meets due to injury. He would start his day with a pinfall victory, taking down Baldwin Wallace's Robert Palmieri at the 1:20 mark to advance to the semifinals. He would end up falling in a tech fall at 19-3 as he moved to the consolation bracket. He would bounce back with a pin of Buffalo's Zachary Ash in just 33 seconds as he also moved to the third place match. He would have a rematch of his first match of the night in the third place match as he took on Robert Palmieri. He would finish with his third pin of the night, this time in 53 seconds and finished the day 3-1.

The other two wrestlers to take the mat for the Cardinals were Alex Finsley and Brian Crevar, who each finished 1-2 each across three matches. Crevar would get his win in his first matchup of the day as he took on Joshua Henderson from Ohio University. He would pick up a pinfall in 53 seconds to move to the quarterfinals. He would fall in a pinfall and a decision to end his day. Alex Finsley would also pick up his lone win of the day in his first matchup as he took on Baldwin Wallace's Evan Daniels. He picked up a Major Decision 14-5, as he got things started Strong. Finsley would then drop a decision and a pinfall as he ended his day 1-2 overall.

The Wheeling University Wrestling team returns to action on Saturday, February 17th, when they head to the Akron Scramble at 10 AM.
