Wheeling, W. Va. - With the holiday break in full swing at Wheeling University, the campus is busy preparing for the upcoming spring semester. The Wheeling University Baseball team is getting ready for their season, and filling fans stockings, with the release of their 2025 schedule. After a heavy road preseason schedule, the Cardinals are giving fans plenty of home action, with 12 home doubleheaders from March to May.
The 2024 season saw many of the veterans leading the way as the Cardinals looked to battle back to the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Tournament. The Cardinals handled their preseason, going 9-4 between their home and neutral site games, and headed into MEC play riding high. However, the tables were quickly turned as Wheeling got swept against Charleston and West Virginia State, before picking up their first conference win in a split with West Virginia Wesleyan. However, as they finished their time in the MEC South, they gained momentum with sweeps of Davis & Elkins and Concord before splitting with Glenville State to sit at 6-6 heading into the divisional schedule. The Cardinals would split against three of the four divisional opponents, earning the #3 seed out of the MEC North. They would meet Charleston in the first round of the MEC Tournament, falling 10-0, and brought their run to an end with a close 8-7 loss at the hands of Frostburg State.
As they do ever season, the Cardinals will head to warmer weather to start the year, taking on Carolina University in a three-game series beginning February 14th. They follow with their first "home" game at Go Mart Ballpark in Charleston, West Virginia the following weekend, where they will play three against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) rival Pitt-Johnstown. They close out their preseason warm weather stretch in Cary, North Carolina, where they will play three games as part of the Atlantic Regional Crossover weekend. They open March with the first of 12 home series, opening things up at nearby Wild Things Park. They host Lake Erie College in a three-game series before jumping into their conference schedule the following weekend.
They open up MEC play with a weekend down south, taking on Charleston on March 15th and West Virginia State on March 16th. They then play a non-conference midweek against CAL-U, before returning home for their MEC home opener against West Virginia Wesleyan and Davis & Elkins. Their first home non-conference game comes against Bluefield State on March 27th before the team ends the month on the road against Concord and Glenville State. As April rolls around, the Cardinals dive right into their MEC North Division Schedule, after their opening weekend of April comes at Home against Salem, they host Fairmont State April 18th and 19th and West Liberty in their final home series May 4th. They add road series with Frostburg State April 12th and 13th and Point Park April 26th and 27th to bring their conference schedule to an end.
