Wheeling, W. Va. - Mountain East Conference (MEC) Play came to the Alma Grace McDonough Center Natatorium for the first time in 2024-2025 as the Wheeling University Women's Swimming team hosted Davis and Elkins on Saturday. It was a bounce back effort for the Cardinals as they picked up their second conference win with a 146-108 win. The Cardinal swimmers put the together a big day in the pool, picking up 10 event wins as they move to 2-1 in conference play.
Leading the effort for the Cardinals was Jade Miller, who finished with four event wins on the day, with three of those coming in individual events. Her first win of the day came in an event she is very familiar with, the 100-Yard Backstroke. She swam a time of 1:02.25 to pick up a two second win and started her day off strong. Her second win of the night also came in the back strole as she entered the 200-Yard Backstroke and once again beat the field, this time by seven seconds with a time of 2:14.44. She rounded out the individual swims in the 200-Yard Individual Medley, where she swam a time of 2:20.61 to round out the big day in the pool. This win would be by six seconds as she has two individual wins of six seconds or greater.
Miller's final win would be in the first event of the night as she swam as a member of Wheeling's 200-Yard Medley Relay team, that took gold with a time of 1:58.06. The Cardinals had two other multi-event winners on the day, with Lydie Sprecher and Sofia Gonzalez Bernal each picking up a pair of wins. Gonzales Bernal would be the first of the two to pick up a win, winning the 100-yard breaststroke. She swam a time of 1:14.26 to beat the field by three seconds. She would pick up the gold in the second breaststroke event, this time 200 yards, swimming a time of 2:43.94. Sprecher's Wins would coming back to back events, as she took The gold in both the 50 and 100 yd freestyles. It took her 26.20 seconds to swim the 50 yard race and 58.43 seconds to swim the 100 yard race to round out her day.
It was the long distance swims that kicked off the night as Lacie Langmyer swam the 1000-Yard Freestyle, finishing with a time of 11:50.47. The 200-Yard Freestyle would be next with Grace Moorley competing and taking home the gold at 2:06.26. The 200-yd butterfly would come after winds from both Miller and Bernal as Mikayla Smitley took third with a time of 2:27.0. The final two events of the night were the 500 yard freestyle and the 100 yard butterfly, with the Cardinals taking third and second respectively. Chelsea McIntosh would finish third in the 500 free, with a time of 6:44.10, while Sofia Castillo took second in the 100-Yard butterfly at 1:06.41.
The Wheeling University Women's Swimming team returns to action on Wednesday, November 13th, when they travel to WVU Tech with first swims beginning at 6 PM.
