Wheeling, W. Va. - The historic start to the 2024-2025 season continued for the Wheeling University Men's Swimming team as they hosted Davis and Elkins on Saturday. The Cardinals picked up their second Mountain East Conference (MEC) Win of the season and set their highest team point total with a 162-81 win. The youth movement continued their success for the Cardinals, with one putting together a historic day in the pool.
That history would be made by Euan MacLeod, who set a pair of pool records in his two individual event wins on the day. His first would come in the 100-Uard Backstroke, where he took first with a time of 1:15.26. He beat the old pool record by a time of 0.1 seconds and for his day started strong. His second historic swim also came in the short distance events, when he took on the 100-Yard Freestyle. This time, he put together a swim of 47.12, breaking a second pool record on the day. MacLeod has been a leader foHe Cardinals all season long, excelling in the short distance events. He continued that success today as he continues to prepare for the midseason meet.
It was just the start of another big day for the Cardinals as they picked up wins in ten different events on the night. The other multi-event winner for the Cardinals was Arvid Hoglund, who won multiple events for the second straight meet. His first win would also come in the short distance events, as he took on the 50-Yard Freestyle. He would swim a time of 2192, beating the field by just under a second to start the day. His final win would come in the 200-Yard Individual Medley, where he swam a time of 2:05.52. Wheeling would also pick up wins in each of the Relay events on the day. Wheeling began the day with a 200-Yard Medley Relay, swimming a time of 1:38.62, and wrapped up the day in the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay, where they swam a time of 3:24.5.
The individual wins began with the 1000-Yard Freestyle, where Nate Yost would get the first win of the day at 11:23.05. Patrick Kirby would come next in the 200-Yard Freestyle, where the Cardinals took the top three spots, with Kirby (1:54.25), Sarp Killic (1:55.04), and EJ Cooper (2:18.25) rounding out the race. After MacLeod's win in the 100-Yard Backstroke, Gustav Lofqvist would take second in the 100-Yard Breaststroke at 1:03.79. Evan Yost would get his first win of the day in the 200-Yard Butterfly (2:07.18) and two events later, Killic would take second in the 200-Yard Backstroke with a time of 2:11.21. Arvid Hoglund would take second in the 200-Yard Breaststroke (2:21.90) and Sarp Killic rounded out the day with a win in the 500-Yard Freestyle at 5:19.02.
The Wheeling University Men's Swimmng team returns to action on Wednesday, November 13th, when they take on WVU Tech with first swims at 6 PM.
