Tomich Cracks Top 100 as Cardinals Run at NCAA DII Regional Championships

Lock Haven, PA. – The postseason runs came to an end for the Wheeling University Men's Cross Country team as they headed to Lock Haven, PA. They would run in the 2024 NCAA DII Atlantic Regional Cross Country Championships, with three runners taking to the course. The Cardinals had one runner crack the top 100 of the event as they competed in their first 10K of the year.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was junior Hunter Tomich, who finished 92nd overall. He would run a time of 33:21.1, finishing just 10 seconds shy of the 10K PR he set last season. He would start out the race strong, needing less than five minutes to run the first 1.6K of the race. It was part of what would be a fast start for the junior, who lowered his time with every 1.6K that he ran. His fastest time came when he hit the 3.5K mark, where he had a pace of 2:09.7. After pacing himself in the middle of the race, Tomich was determined to hold his top 100 spot. It would take him under three minutes to run the final 1.1K, setting a pace of 2:54.5 down the stretch. It was the second Regional Championship event for the junior as he ended his season on a high note.

The other two Cardinals runners were each taking on their first ever Regional Championship runs. Freshman Magnus Polkner was the next fastest runner, taking 111th in the field. He would run a time of 33:45.0 to finish out the day, as he competed in his first career 10K event . The final Cardinal runner was sophomore Shane Levesque, who took 115th to round out the day. Levesque finished at 34:03.8 to round out the day and put all three Cardinals inside the top 115. Two of the three Cardinal runners were able to break the 34 minute mark, rounding out a strong day of competition.

The Wheeling University Men's Cross Country team now heads to the off-season as the distance runners get set to take on Track & Field season.
