Wheeling Set to Swim Against Senators

Wheeling, W. Va- The Wheeling University Men's and Women's Swim teams (6-2), (1-1) have performed exceptionally well this season. Unfortunately, their six-meet win streak came to a close last Saturday in Indiana, Pennsylvania, where they fell to the Crimson Hawks. Tomorrow, the Cardinals will return home and face off against a fellow Mountain East Conference (MEC) member, the Davis & Elkins Senators.

The Cardinals picked up three gold medals during the meet. The Men's A Team was victorious in the 200-Yard Freestyle Medley (1:28.01). Euan MacLeod placed first in the 100-Yard Breaststroke (1:00.26), and Gabby Baiano edged out the Crimson Hawks' swimmers in the 500-Yard Freestyle (5:25.37).

The Men's side saw many individual swimmers finish in the top three. As a team in the 200-Yard Freestyle Medley, they achieved a first-place finish and second in the 200-Yard Medley Relay. Gustav Lofqvist was awarded the only individual silver medal in the 100-Yard Butterfly. Nathan Reigal picked up two bronze medals in 200 and 500-Yard Freestyle. Evan Yost added two more third-place finishes in the 100-Yard Butterfly and Backstroke. Patrick Kirby and Arvid Hoglund added third-place finishes in the 200-Yard Individual Medley and 50-Yard Freestyle, respectively.

On the Women's side, the team comprised of Ana Noguera Munoz, Grace Moorely, Sofia Castillo, and Lydie Sprecher took home a second-place finish in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay.  Jade Miller, Sofia Gonzalez Bernal, Castillo, and Munoz finished third in the 200-Yard Medley Relay. Individually, Sprecher was awarded a bronze medal in the 50-Yard Freestyle, and Miller finished third in the 200-Yard Individual Medley.

The Matchup

The Senators and the Cardinals have only met three times in program history, with Wheeling ahead 2-1 for the Men's and Women's teams. However, Davis & Elkins got the better of both teams in the meeting almost a year ago on November 11th, 2023. They took home a 168-71 Mens win and a tightly contested 136-107 victory over the Women.

D&E's teams are coming off one win and three losses in the Fairmont Duals. The Men lost 106.5-77.5 to the Falcons and 133-64 to the Salem Tigers. The Women fell short to FSU 126-72.5 and emerged victorious over Salem 108.5-92.

The Details

The Wheeling University Men's and Women's teams will be inside the Alma Grace McDonough Center at the Natatorium on Saturday, November 9th. The meet will be streamed HERE.
