Indiana, PA. – The Wheeling University Women's Swimming team continued their non-conference trek on Saturday, traveling to Indiana, Pennsylvania. The Cardinals battled one of the top swim programs in the region, but in the end fell 145-41. The Cardinals would pick up one win on the night as they continue preparing for the Malone Mid-Season meet.
The lone win on the day would come from
Gabby Baiano in one of the final individual events of the night. She would take on the 500 Yard Freestyle, swimming against four other swimmers. It was a tight race to the end, but it was Baiano who squeezed out the victory by three seconds. She swam a time of 5:25.37, wrapping up what was a strong event for the junior, and was one of two individual events that she swam in. She also took on the 200-Yard Freestyle, and picked up a second place finish with a time of 2:01.70. Baiano rounded out the night as the fourth leg of the team's 200-Yard Freestyle Relay. She teamed with
Maria Jones,
Lacie Langmyer, and
Chelsea McIntosh to swim a time of 1:51.54, taking fifth in the event.
The first relay of the day was the 200-Yard Medley Relay, where
Jade Miller,
Sofia Gonzalez Bernal,
Sofia Castillo, and Ana Noguera teamed up. The foursome finished third with a time of 1:57.55 as they got things started for the Cardinals. After Baiano kicked off the individual events,
Lydie Sprecher would compete in the 50-Yard Freestyle, taking third with a time of 25.73. The short distance events continued for the Cardinals as Miller took on one of her top events in the 200 Yard Individual Medley. Miller would take third in the field with a time of 2:21.88 as the top three performances continuing for the Cardinals. Sprecher would be next in the 100-Yard Butterfly, taking a fourth place finish at 1:04.83, while Langmyer took fourth in the 100-Yard Freestyle (58.33).
It was a day full of short distance races, and
Olivia Moyer would be the Cardinal's top swimmer in the 100-Yard Backstroke, where she took fourth at 1:10.00. After Baiano's win in the 500-Yard Freestyle, Miller would round out the individual events, taking fourth in the 100-YArd Breaststroke with a time of 1:12.90. The Cardinals rounded out the day with their top relay time in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay with Noguera,
Grace Moorley, Castillo, and Sprecher leading the way. The foursome rounded out the day with a second-place finish, swimming a time of 1:45.56.
The Wheeling University Women's Swimming team returns to action on Saturday, December 9th, when they host Davis & Elkins at 1 PM.
