Montgomery, W. Va. - The first half of the dual meet schedule came to an end for the Wheeling University Men's Swimming team (8-2) as they competed against WVU Tech in dual meat action Wednesday night. The Cardinals picked up their eighth win of the season, beating the Golden Bears 120-113. The team is now just one win away from tying the single season win record for the men's swimming program and were powered once again by their young talent.
The Cardinals had Two swimmers earn multiple wins on the day, with
Evan Yost and
Euan MacLeod each accomplishing the feet. First up was Yost, who won multiple events for the first time in his collegiate career. He started things off in the 50 yard back stroke, where he swam a time of 29.93 seconds. His second win would come five events later in the 100-yard backstroke. He would complete his sweep of the backstroke on the day, swimming a time of 1:03.55. The other multi-event winner would be MacLeod, who also excelled in the short distance events. He would start his day with a win in the 50-yard freestyle, Swimming a time of 23.98 seconds. He wrapped up his day in the 50 yard butterfly, where he swam a time of 25.94 seconds.
Arvid Hoglund would be the one to get the individual wins started for the Cardinals, swimming in the 200 yard freestyle. He picked up gold with a time of 2:04.93 to give the Cardinals momentum. After Yost and MacLeod each picked up their first wins, it was time for Sarp Killic to get in on the action in the 100 yard freestyle. He would post a time of 55.05, and rounded out the individual events with a second place finish in the 100 yard individual medley (1:04.27). Before that, the Cardinals picked up a pair of silver medals as
Nathan Yost took second in the 400 yard freestyle (4;44.51), while
Alex Ferebee took second in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:19.42).
The Cardinals rounded out the day with a split of the two relay events, winning the 200-yard freestyle relay and falling in the 200 yarf medley relay. The wind came in the final event of the day as
Patrick Kirby, Hoglund, Alberto Kofinke, and Killic took the top spot at 1:39.82. In the first and then of the day, Wheeling would take second in the 200 yard medley relay, with
Evan Yost, MacLeod,
Nathan Yost, and Kofinke Swimming a time of 1:53.26.
The Wheeling University Men's Swimming team returns to action on Thursday, November 21
st, when they take on the Malone Midseason Invitational.
