Cardinals Fall to Mountain Lions

Wheeling W. Va- The Wheeling Men's Soccer team (0-8-3), (0-6-2) hosted Concord University under the bright lights of Bishop Schmitt Field. Unfortunately, the Mountain Lions toppled the Cardinals 4-1 in front of the rowdy Wheeling crowd.

Concord got to work early, and Ignacio Alvarez opened up the scoring six minutes into the match. The Mountain Lions continued to dictate play to strike again a little under 10 minutes later. Patrick Alouider created a chance from nothing to speed past the defense. He spotted Alvarez on the other side and crossed it to him. He made no mistake in his shot selection as Alvarez reappeared on the scoresheet. The Wheeling defense contained the constant Concord attack but eventually gave in to the pressure. Richard Henry struck just before the half ended to take a 3-0 lead into the break.

Three minutes after the start of the second half, the Cardinals were presented with an opportunity to obtain their first goal of the evening with a penalty kick. Josh Timbrell was chosen to take the kick, but a diving effort from Nathan Scargill kept Wheeling off the board. The Mountain Lions used the momentum created from the PK save for the next eight minutes, and Patrick Alouider cashed in on the rebound in the box to make it 4-0.

The Cardinals were down but never gave up. They put up a fight, and their work ethic paid off. They were rewarded with a free kick from a Concord foul. Alvaro Ivanov placed the ball on the opposite side of the goal to find Pablo Prieto directing it past Scargill. Prieto's marker in the 71st minute marked his first goal in his college career.

The Concord offense tested Carlos Molina quite a bit, but he soiled their plans to extend their lead. He stopped two shots within a minute and a half from each other and then another three shots later on within 20 seconds.

In the 4-1 loss, Molina stopped four shots. Prieto registered the only goal for the Cardinals. Ivanov picked up the assist on the goal, three shots, and one on the net. Jordan Talyor and Josh Timbrell finished with a shot on goal. Antonio Herra-Blackwood and Luka Martinaj recorded a shot net.

The Cardinals will travel to the state capital to take on the University of Charleston on Sunday, October 13th, at 4 p.m.
