Morgantown, W. Va. – The two-day WVU Games came to an end on Saturday from the Mylan Park Aquatic Center. The Wheeling University Women's Swimming team finishes as the top NCAA DII team at the event, finishing third out of seven teams. The Cardinals had another big day, with several top 20 finishes, as they prepare to go into Mountain East Conference (MEC) play next week.
The top two finishes of the day came from
Sofia Gonzalez Bernal picking up what would be the top individual finish of the day. It came in the 200-Yard Breaststroke, where she finished 13th overall with a time of 2:45.73. It was Gonzalez Bernal's lone individual swim of the day as she rounded out her tournament.
Jade Miller was the other Cardinal to finish with a top 15 finish of the day, coming in the 200-Yard Backstroke. She would take 14th overall at the event, swimming a time of 2:18.30, picking up her third top 20 finish of the event. She would finalize her tournament in the 200-Yard Individual Medley #-343 she finished 16th with a time of 2:21.07. Miller and Gonzalez Bernal set the tone for the team as they wrapped up their first event of the year.
The individual events would begin with the short distance events, with Lydia Sprecher leading the way in the 100-Yard Freestyle. Sprecher would finish 17th overall with a time of 57.44 as she got the day's top 20 finishes started. After Gonzalez Bernal and Miller had their success, it was time to go to the 500-Yard Freestyle with
Grace Moorley picking up where she left off from her freshman season. The sophomore would finish 17th overall with a time of 5:42.72, while
Lacie Langmyer took 18th at 5:43.03. Sprecher was back for the 100-Yard Butterfly, where she picked up her second top 20 finish of the day, taking 19th at 1:04.00. Miller rounded out the individual events in her 200-Yard Individual Medley, rounding out the Cardinal top 20 finishes.
In the relay events, the distance relay was up first with the 400-Yard Medley Relay. It would be the team of Miller, Gonzalez Bernal, Sprecher, and Moorley who led the way with a ninth place finish. The foursome had the top relay time for the Cardinals, swimming a 4:20.18 to start things off. In the final relay event of the night, it was Sprecher, Miller, Moorley, and Sophia Castillo taking the pool. The foursome would finish eighth with a time of 1:44.95 to round out the day.
The Wheeling University Women's Swimming team returns to action on Saturday, October 12th, when they compete at the West Virginia Wesleyan with first events at 1 PM.
