Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Clark’s PK Goal Leads Cardinals in Loss to Frostburg State

Wheeling, W. Va. - The final two weeks of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Men's Soccer kicked off Wednesday at Bishop Schmitt Field. It was a battle throughout the night at Bishop Schmitt Field as the Wheeling University Men's Soccer team (2-10-4, 1-8-3) hosted Frostburg State. The Cardinals would get on the board with under two minutes to play, but it would prove too little too late as the Cardinals fell to the Bobcats 2-1 in their penultimate home game of the season.

It was a tightly contested game early on, with the Cardinals holding a slight 8-6 shot advantage over the first 45 minutes of play. Frostburg State would en up taking the first shot of the game in the second minute, and Wheeling followed six minutes later, with both shots falling off net. The first shot on net of the night would come from the Bobcats in the 10th minute, but Carlos Molina would jump in front of the shot for the save. Three of the Frostburg State six shots would come in that first 10 minutes, as the Cardinals controlled the chances the rest of the half. Wheeling's first shot on net would be in the 21st minute, when Alvaro Ivanov attempted a free kick that sailed into the outstretched arms of Frostburg's Jan Foret to keep it a scoreless game.

The first goal would come in the 38th minute when Frostburg State's Christian Mathieu found Carlos Quintero Rivas in front of the net and the Bobcats took a 1-0 lead. Wheeling would have one more chance before the break as Ivanov put his second shot of the day on net, but another save from Foret sent the game into halftime with the score sitting at 1-0 in favor of Frostburg State. The Cardinals had a few big chances in the first half, but it was n the second half when they made their biggest push of the night. They took 19 shots over the final 45 minutes of play, and it started in the first 30 seconds of the new half. Josh Timbrell quickly moved the ball upfield and took a shot on net in the 45th minute that was saved by Foret. Three minutes later, it was Rocco LiTrenta who tried for the shot, but another Foret save kept it a 1-0 Frostburg State lead.

Wheeling would outshoot Frostburg State 11-3 over the final 45 minutes of play, with five of those 11 shots finding their way on net. What looked like the Cardinal's first goal of the day in the 51st minute was wiped away by an offside call that brought the goal back. In the 67th minute, Joergen Bjerkreim would put a shot on net and Kudikwashe Chitani wuld add a shot on goal of his own in the 72nd minute. Frostburg State would get their second goal of the day in the 74th minute as Dominic Good went coast-to-coast to make it a 2-0 game. Wheeling would get on the board in the 88th minute when a penalty in the box set up a PK opportunity for Sam Clark. Clark would kick through the attempt and that would bring the game to an end at 2-1.

The Cardinals were led by Alvaro Ivanov, who took a team-high four shots, putting two of those shots on goal. Ivanov has been a leader on both sides of the ball this season and continues to be a leader for the team.
