Bethany Next Stop for Wheeling Swim

Wheeling, W. Va—The wins keep coming for the Wheeling Men's and Women's (4-1), (1-1) swim teams, who have won four consecutive meets convincingly. The teams matched up against Malone University last Saturday in the Natatorium inside the Alma Grace McDonough Center. The Men's team won 138-48, and the Women's team won 104-72. 

Sophomore Patrick Kirby led the Cardinals in a big way. He picked up two gold medals in the 200-yard Freestyle and the 100-yard Backstroke, with his most impressive performance in the Freestyle, beating the Pioneer swimmers by 10 seconds, swimming a time of 1:54:79. Nathan Reigel and Euan MacLeod picked up two gold medals as well. Reigel placed first in the 1,000-yard Freestyle, beating out Malone by 49 seconds, swimming a time of 11:00:45, and the 500-yard Freestyle. MacLeod was victorious in the 200-yard Individual Medley, recording a time of 2:05.88, and 100-yard Breaststroke. Gustav Lofqvist, Arvid Hoglund, and Sarp Killic all won one gold medal each—Lofqvist in the 50-yard Freestyle, Hoglund in the 100-yard Butterfly, and Killic in the 100-yard Freestyle. The Men's team, as a whole, came on top in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay and the 200-yard Medley Relay.

For his performance in the Washington & Jefferson/Salem Tri-Meet and against Malone, Killic was chosen as the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Male Swimmer of the Week for the first time in his career.

The Women's team had a successful afternoon against Malone as well. Jade Miller finished with one gold medal in the 100-yard Butterfly, recording a time of 1:03.24, and a silver medal in the 100-yard Backstroke. Mikayla Smitley finished only one second behind Miller in the event for a silver medal. Ana Noguera Munoz, Lydie Sprecher, and Elizabeth Strange were awarded gold medals in the 50-yard Freestyle (26.04), 100-yard Breaststroke (1:13.80), and 200-yard Freestyle (2:35.50), respectively. Chelsea McIntosh, Sofia Gonzalez Bernal, Maria Jones, and Sofia Castillo all finished a close second in their events. McIntosh in the 1,000-yard Freestyle, Bernal in the 200-yard Individual Medley, Jones in the 100-yard Freestyle, and Castillo in the 500-yard Freestyle. The Cardinal Women's team was victorious in the 200-yard Medley Relay and the 400-yard Freestyle Relay.

The Matchup

Wheeling will take on Bethany College and Chatham University in their next meet. The Men's Swim team is 4-2 all-time over Bethany and 1-0 over Chatham. The Women's Swim team is undefeated versus Bethany at 6-0 and has only met the Chatham Cougars once and won.

The Details

The Wheeling Cardinals Men's and Women's teams will travel to Bethany, WV, on Saturday, October 26th. The first event starts at 1 p.m. They will compete in the Bethany Tri-Meet against Chatham University and Bethany College.
