State Capital Next on Cardinal’s Agenda

Wheeling, W. Va- After another tough loss to Concord at home, the Wheeling Men's Soccer team (0-8-3), (0-6-2) prepares for its next two road games. They start with a difficult trip to West Virginia's capital, the University of Charleston Golden Eagles.

The Cardinals went down early to the Mountain Lions on Wednesday but never stopped fighting. They trailed 2-0 before the first 45 minutes of play were finished. The defense held the potent Concord offense after the 10th minute, but right before halftime, Concord found an opening and added another to their total to go up by three before the break.

With only a few minutes played in the second half, Josh Timbrell had a chance to put the Cardinals on the board with a penalty kick. He took the shot, but it was stopped because of a diving effort by the Concord keeper. The Mountian Lions extended their lead to four shortly after, but this did not deter the Cardinals from continuing to look for one of their own. In the 71st minute, Alvaro Ivanov took a free kick for Wheeling that landed in the box. Then, Pablo Prieto directed the ball into the net, marking the first Cardinal goal of the night and his first collegiate goal

The Golden Perch
Wheeling and Charleston met earlier this season on September 8th at Bishop Schmitt Field. The Golden Eagles flew down and swept the Cardinals 5-0. Charleston scored in the fifth minute and then added two more a minute and a half later. The Golden Eagles are coming off an 8-2 victory over the Salem Tigers. The score was held to just 3-1 in favor of the Golden Eagles at halftime, but then Charleston soared and scored five to breeze past Salem. Jack Kay completed the hattrick in the second half to finish off the Tigers. They are spearheaded by Mountain East Conference (MEC) points leader, Joao Belmudes, racking up 19 on the season. Kay and Belmudes lead the MEC in goals at seven a piece. This will be the last time the two schools meet this season as Wheeling looks to pick up their first win over Charleston since 2015.

The Details
