Wheeling, W. Va. – It was a day of celebration inside the Alma Grace McDonough Center Natatorium as the Wheeling University Women's Swimming team honored their senior
Sofia Castillo. It was also a big day in the pool for the Cardinals as they swept their tri meet against Hiram and Bethany College by scores of 172-79 and 176-47. The Cardinals had two different swimmers finish with four wins on the night as they finished out a big day.
The first Cardinal to reach the four-win mark was sophomore
Olivia Moyer, who set a career-high for wins in a single event. Her first win of the day came in the 200-Yard Backstroke, as she kicked things off with a time of 2:54.63 to kick off her big day. She rounded out her individual wins with a gold medal in the 50-Yard Freestyle, swimming a time of 30.76. her other two wins came in the relay events as she swam as part of both the 200-Yard Medley Relay and the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay. She teamed up with
Marra Johnson,
Sofia Castillo, and
Gabby Baiano to swim a 2:01.12 in the Medley Relay and swam with Johnson,
Chelsea McIntosh, and
Maria Jones to a time of 1:52.56 in the Freestyle Relay.
Johnson was the other four event winner for the Cardinals, with two of those wins also coming as part of the relay events. Her first individual win came in her first individual event of the day as she took on the 1000 Yard Freestyle for the first time in her career. She passed the test with flying colors, swimming a 12:06.97 to get the Cardinals on the board. Her other individual win came in the 50-Yard Breaststroke, where she swam a time of 34.73 to take the top spot.
Jade Miller was also a multi event winner for the Cardinals, bringing home her first win in the 200-Yard Freestyle with a time of 2:08.36. her next win was in the 50-Yard Butterfly where she swam a 27.61.
The final multi event winners for the Cardinals were
Grace Moorley,
Caitlin Oltman, and
Gabby Baiano. Moorley would show off her flexibility by picking up wins in the 50-Yard Freestyle (26.75) and the 200-Yard Backstroke (2:22.81). Oltman competed in two events that she has frequented throughout the season, winning both the 500-Yard Freestyle (5:47.63) and the 100-Yard Freestyle (59.33) as she continued her strong season. While she did not swim in a distance event on the day, Baiano rounded things out with a pair of wins in the mid-distance. Her first win came in the 200-Yard Butterfly (2:17.54) and the 200-Yard Individual Medley (2:26.64).
The Wheeling University Women's Swimming team returns to action on Saturday, February 3rd, when they take on Penn State Behrend at 1 PM.
