Box Score 2 Indiana, PA. – After a big win at home on Friday night to start the weekend, the Wheeling University Volleyball team (8-6, 1-1) hit the road on Saturday to face IUP. It was a rematch of the 2022 NCAA Atlantic Regional Quarterfinals matchup, but this season it went the other way as Wheeling fell 3-1. They dropped to 8-6 overall and 6-2 in Atlantic Region play as they wrapped up the month of September.
In the first set, IUP began the day with the first two points of the match before the Cardinals answered with two of their own to tie things at 2-2. Both teams went on early runs in the set, but through the first 14 points the set sat tied at 7-7. Freshman
Katie Wilking hit back-to-back kills to give Wheeling their first lead of the set at 9-8. It would spark the Cardinals on a 6-2 run that pushed that lead t 15-10 through the middle portion of the set.
Mady Winters and
Cami Black each knocked down kills as the set continued, before a pair of
Karly Niesen kills made it 21-14. IUP would battle back with a 4-1 run that got it as close as 22-18, but the Cardinals would go on to win the set on a
Riley Kindall kill that made it 25-19 and gave Wheeling a 1-0 lead.
IUP went on a late run in set one and continued that into set two as they went on an early run to go ahead 6-3. A set error for the Crimson Hawks would momentarily break the run, but they kept going and built a 10-4 lead. Wilking got back on the board with a kill to break the run, and Wheeling would start a run of her own as they scored six of the next eight points to bring it back to a 13-10 lead. However, it was too little too late as IUP picked up a 25-21 set two win that evened the match at 1-1. Set three was the turning point of the match as both teams battled for the advantage heading into the fourth set. The set was tied 9-9 after the first 18 points of the set and both teams would then hit runs that brought the set to a win-by-two scenario.
The Cardinals would be the first to hit their run as
Riley Kindall picked up a kill to start things off. It kicked off a 10-4 run for the team as they built a 19-13 lead late in the set. Wilking,
Tylah Yeomans, and
Cami Black all picked up kills during the run as Wheeling set themselves in the driver's seat. IUP responded with a 7-2 run of their own and the score sat at 21-20 before tying it up at 22-22. The Crimson Hawks took the lead at 23-22, before Winters added a kill and an attack error set Wheeling up with set point. IUP would tie the set to bring up a win-by-two scenario and went on to score three straight points to win the set 26-24 and take a 2-1 lead. The teams would battle to another win-by-two scenario in set four, but once again it would be IUP that picked up the victory and went on to win 3-1.
Leading the Cardinal's offense was junior
Tylah Yeomans, who finished with 13 kills in the loss. It was the 11th double digit kills effort for Yeomans on the year as she was one of two double digit kills on the day.
Katie Wilking was the other Cardinal to finish with double digit kills, knocking down 10 on the day.
Karly Niesen was two assists shy of reaching her 4,000 career assist milestone, sitting at 41 on the day, needing just two more assists to reach the milestone. On the defensive side,
Berit Jones led the way with 20 digs on the day, picking up 20+ digs for the second straight match, while Kindall added 19 digs to round out the day.
