Wheeling, W. Va. – After back-to-back tough road contests, The Wheeling University Men's Soccer team (0-6-1, 0-4-1) return home on Wednesday evening, looking to get back on track. They host Frostburg State in Mountain East Conference (MEC) action as they look for their first win of the season. The offense has been creating more opportunities as of late, and looks to breakthrough on their home field.
The Cardinals are coming off a hard-fought loss against West Liberty where they fell 2-0, but they had a lot of positives with Midfielder
Alvaro Ivanov and
TJ Cherry having strong games which is something to build off of going forward. The team overall had some good scoring chances as well and the goaltending was also strong, with
Carlos Molina making two saves on his four shots faced.
The Men's Soccer Team will be looking to put the loss behind them because they have a quick turnaround from Sunday's game to the next one against Frostburg State who comes into Wednesday's game with a 4-4 record and a win in their last game, so they will be a tough opponent. Dating back to 2019 Wheeling has played Frostburg State 7 times and they are currently 3-4 in those 7 games, so they will be looking to make the matchup a tie after Wednesday.
TJ Cherry has been the best player for Wheeling this season with 2 goals in 7 games and he has a shooting percentage of 0.222 and a shots on goal percentage of 0.444, so he will look to continue his great play on Wednesday. The Men's Soccer team has also been getting really solid goaltending from their starting goalie
Carlos Molina who has GAA of 2.83 and a save percentage of 0.575.
On the opposing side, Frostburg State has two players tied with three goals each Carlos Quintero Rivas and Alex Retzos who have been great for Frostburg and will be two players that Wheeling will have to pay close attention to on defense. Frostburg State also has a dynamic goalie in Joel Assal who is rocking a 1.75 GAA and 0.745 save percentage, so Wheeling will hope to get a few past him on Wednesday.
