Wheeling, W. Va. - On Thursday, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced their 2023 Team Academic Excellence Award and their NABC Honors Court members. Men's Basketball student-athletes from across the country were recognized for their hard work in the classroom, and the Wheeling University Men's Basketball team had two honorees on this year's list. Senior John Korte and Graduate Student Dozie Enyosiobi represented Wheeling as two of over 1,000 student-athletes honored for their hard work.
In order to qualify for an NABC Honors Court award, a player must be academically in their junior, senior, or graduate student year and be a varsity player. They then must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the academic year and must be a member of a four-year institution with at least one active NABC-member coach. It is the second year in a row that the Cardinals have had multiple honorees on the list, after they had five players earn the award a season ago. Enoysiobi and Korte are each repeat winners, taking home the award for the second time in their careers, as they continue to manage their work on the court and in the classroom.
Korte was the Cardinal's leader throughout the 2022-23 season, averaging a team-high 19.6 points per game, while also leading the way with 7.3 rebounds per game. He ranked third in the MEC in scoring average and finished the year with five double-doubles and finished just eight points shy of the single-game record when he put up 40 points against West Liberty back on January 21st. For his efforts, Korte was rewarded with the first First Team All-MEC honor of his career, and the first All-MEC award he has one in his four years with the Cardinals.
Enyosiobi had a career-year for the Cardinals, seeing the most action he has seen playing in 10 games for the Cardinals. He shot a career-best 60% from the floor (3-5) and added a career-best four free throws, going 4-9 from the charity stripe. He finished the year with 10 points and seven rebounds while picking up the first assist of his career. Enyosiobi has been a role player throughout his career with the Cardinals and is earning the second NABC Honors Court award of his career after earning the honor last season.
The Wheeling University Men's Basketball team continues through their off-season as they prepare to come back stronger for the 2023-24 season.
