Wheeling Football Begins Summer Camp Schedule with Junior Day/Skill Showcase Sunday at Bishop Schmitt Field

Wheeling, W. Va. - The summer months are upon us at Wheeling University with Wheeling Outdoor Track & Field being the lone team left in competition on the road to the 2023 NCAA DII Outdoor Track & Field National Championships. Student-athletes are back home with their families training for the 2023-24 season, but our teams are on campus and ready to work with the community. The Wheeling University Football team is holding the first camp of the summer months, when they host their Junior Day/Skills Showcase on Sunday, May 21st at Bishop Schmitt Field.

The event will serve as a recruiting visit, where participants will get to meet with Wheeling Football coaches and players and learn about what the program has to offer. Check-in begins at 9:30 AM, where participants will meet inside the Alma Grace McDonough Center as they tour the facilities and meet with Wheeling Head Football Coach Zac Bruney. Along with the tour of the athletic facilities, the participants will also get a look at the campus as a whole to see what academic opportunities they will have and learn about the mission of Wheeling University. After the tour, lunch will be provided for participants and their families at $10 per person.
After lunch, the players will get to take the field in front of Wheeling Coaches at Bishop Schmitt Field for the Skill Showcase. Players will be put through speed and agility drills, as well as position specific drills, as they showcase their skills on the turf. The day will end with closing remarks from Bruney before the day comes to a close. The Cardinals will be looking for some future players to join their program, and the event will help players be able to get their names on the radar for the 2024 recruiting class.

The Wheeling University Football team is coming off their best season in program history during the 2022 season that saw them go 7-4 overall and 6-4 in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play. They broke the single season win record and were in contention for a spot in the NCAA Division II Regional Playoffs up until the final three weeks of the regular season. Since the program was established back during the 2018 season, the Cardinals have put together a better record during each season of MEC play. This past year, they had eight players earn All-MEC honors and saw running back Sy Alli IV earn a Don Hanson All-American Honorable Mention Distinction.

Registration for the Junior Day/Skill Showcase is still open, with pre-registration costing $20 per player and walk-ups costing $25. Lunch for participants and their guests is also available at $10 per person but is optional.
