Taylor Scores Three Goals as Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Frostburg State

Wheeling, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Men's Lacrosse team (2-6, 0-1) wrapped up a three-game home stand on Tuesday when they hosted Frostburg State. The ranked Bobcats had their offense rolling throughout the night, as the Cardinals fell to the Bobcats 20-6. Wheeling's Ty Taylor led the way with three goals on the day as the Cardinals battled against one of the top teams in the country.

Through the game's first quarter, the Cardinals were held off the board as Frostburg State possessed the ball. Goalkeeper Austin Hall made four saves in that first quarter, but Frostburg State tacked on six goals through the quarter. Despite not getting on the board in the quarter, the Cardinals still had several chances, as they took eight shots, putting two of those on goal. After the first it was 6-0 Frostburg State and the Cardinals looked for an answer in the second. Frostburg State would take four shots over the first three minutes of the quarter with three of those being on goal. Hall made two saves and a blocked shot got the ball back in Wheeling's possession and they took advantage.

After a successful clear attempt from the Cardinals, Dakota String began setting the Cardinals offense. He found sophomore Brenner Chase who connecter on his first goal of the game to make it a 6-1 game with 12:05 to go before halftime. After three straight scores by the Bobcats, the Cardinals were back at it in offense after a successful clear attempt. Mike Andersson got the ball in his stick and made a move around the back of the net to come open. He took his shot and scored his 29th goal of the season to make it a 9-2 game. Hall had one of his best quarters of the game in the second, making eight saves on 12 shots faced for a .667 save percentage for the quarter. Still, the Cardinals entered the locker room trailing 13-2.

As they came out in the third quarter, Hall kept ghs big day going in the third quarter, tying his game-high with eight more saves. He once again finished with a .667 save percentage for the quarter, but Wheeling was once again held off the board. At the end of the third, Wheeling trailed 17-2, but had their best offensive quarter to end the day. After Frostburg State started the quarter with a pair of goals, the Cardinals would once again take advantage of a Bobcats penalty. Strong once again got the ball in his stick and this time he was the one who found the net. It was a pass from Jacob Knippel that opened Strong up and allowed him to score his first Goal of the night to make it a 19-3 game with 11:49 to play.

It wouldn't take long for the Cardinals to be back on the board as Ty Taylor got his big game going. He scored his first goal unassisted less than a minute after Knippel's goal to make it a 19-4 game. Both teams would go silent over the next seven minutes, marking the longest streak without a score in the game. Frostburg State notched their 20th score of the night with 4:43 to play and a little over a minute later Taylor was on the board again to make it a 20-5 game. He took the pass from Jack Rowe and the Cardinals would try to end things on a high note. Nate Castnerb would win the ensuing face-off and Justin Stewart had the Cardinals set on offense. Rowe would connect with Taylor one more time with 2:59 to play to bring the game to its final score at 20-6.

Ty Taylor would be the Cardinals leader with three goals on the day and was the most efficient shooter for the team. The sophomore took six shots on the night and put all six of those shots on net for a .500 shooting percentage and a 1.000 shot on goal percentage. Mike Andersson scored his 29th goal of the season on the night, and is chasing down the 100th goal of his career, needing just eight to accomplish the feat. Dakota Strong added a goal and an assist on the day while Brenner Chase added the final goal of the night. Austin Hall set a new season-high with 20 saves. He faced 37 shots on goal during the night and finished with a .541 save percentage on the night.

The Wheeling University Men's Lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, March 25th when they hit the road to face Davis & Elkins at 1 PM
