Men’s Swimming Takes Eighth at Malone Invitational

Canton, OH. – The Wheeling University Men's Swimming team wrapped up the Malone Midseason Invitational on Saturday after three long days of competition. The Cardinals finished 8th in the field out of 14 teams, rising their position four spots from last season's Oberlin College Midseason meet. It was another big day for Jiwh Santos and Quintin Tayali as they led the Cardinals in their final day of competition.

Tayali would start the day off in the 100-Yard Freestyle, and picked up his third top three finish of the day. He swam a 46.75 to finish third in the field, and swim the third fastest time in the 100 Free in school history. It was the only individual swim of the day for Tayali, but he was also part of both Cardinal relay teams. He began by competing with teammates Patrick Kirby, Santos, and Alberto Kofinke in the 400-Yard Medley Relay and took home 7th with a time of 3:41.99. He would also wrap up the event in the final race of the day, swimming a Kirby, Santos, and Nathan Yost in the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay. It was another top five finish for the team as they took third overall at 3:13.71 to round out the day.

Jiwh Santos was the other leading performer for the Cardinals, and he also started his day in the 100-Yard Freestyle. He would swim the sixth fastest time in school history, swimming 46.88 in his lone solo event. Joining those two in the 100 Free was Ethan Banks, who placed 29th with a time of 54.16. The individual events began with the 200-Yard Individual Medley, with freshman Patrick Kirby leading the way in 9th (2:02.71) while Alex Ferebee took 21st (2:19.52). Nathan Yost would get in on the individual action, leading the way in the 200-Yard Butterfly with a 13th place finish (2:11.27) as he finished puff the individual events.

The Wheeling University Men's Swimming team now heads into their winter break as they prepare for 2024. The Cardinals return to action on Friday, January 5th, when they take on Converse and Lenoir Rhyme University.
