Elkins, W. Va. – With the mid-season meet two weeks away, the Wheeling University Women's Swimming team jumped back into Mountain East Conference (MEC) play on Saturday. They kept their success in the pool going as they split the day to move to 7-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play. They picked up a win over Notre Dame College 134-102 and fell to Davis & Elkins 136-107 to round out the sweep.
In their eight events swam, the Cardinals earned four wins on the day courtesy of junior
Jade Miller and sophomore
Gabby Baiano. The first of the two wins came in the distance events as
Gabby Baiano took on the 1000 Yard Freestyle. It is an event that Baiano has had success in throughout her career, and she continues that success with her second first place finish of the year. She finished with a time of 11:17.98 to kickstart her day. She added a second win under her belt in her next event as she swam in the 200-yard Freestyle. She swam a 2:05.81 to complete the sweep of her events as she continues to grow for the Cardinals. The other multi-event winner on the day came courtesy of
Jade Miller, who won the 200-Yard Individual Medley.
She was able to beat the rest of the field by jut under two full seconds, swimming a 2:20.45 to lead the way. Her second win of the day kicked off the event as she took on the 100-Yard Backstroke. She earned the MEC Championship in the event last season, and showed why as she swam the event in 1:02.41 to earn the first place finish. The final top three finish of the day came courtesy of Sophia Castillo, who ended up taking second in the 100-Yard Fly. She swam a time of 1:06.31 to capture the second place finish for the Cardinals.
Marra Johnson added a fifth place finish in the 100-Yard Breastroke with a time of 1:17.29 and
Olivia Moyer added a third place finish in the 200-Yard Butterfly.
The Wheeling University Women's Swimming team returns to action on Thursday, November 16th, when they take on the Malone Midseason meet.
