Box Score 1 Elkins, W. Va. – In their final tune-up before the 2023 mid-season meet, the Wheeling University Men's Swimming team returned to Mountain East Conference (MEC) action on Saturday. They swam at the Davis & Elkins tri-meet and ended up being swept in conference action. They fell to Davis & Elkins 168-71 before falling to Notre Dame College 112-107 as they dropped to 5-4 overall and 1-3 in conference action.
With no relay events on the day, the Cardinals relied on their individual swims to lead the way as they swam in eight different events on the day. Things kicked off with the 100-Yard Backstroke, with junior Quinton Tayali competing in the event for the first time this season. He would take home a third place finish, with a time of 56.70 as he got his day started strong. It was the first of three top three finishes for the junior, as he came back in the 12th event of the day and took 2nd in the 50-Yard Freestyle with a time of 22.46. He rounded out the day with another third place finish in the 100-Yard Fly, where he swam a 53.72. Tayali is leading the way for the Cardinals in the short distance events and continued his success on Saturday.
The 100-Yard Breaststroke was next as
Jiwh Santos finished third with a time of 1:04.14 and
Alex Ferebee took sixth at 1:13.89.
Patrick Kirby and Alberto Kofinke were up next in long-distance racing as they took on the 1000-Yard Freestyle. Kirby led the way for the Cardinals with a 3rd place finish at 11:14.55 while Kofinke swam a 12:28.74.
Nathan Yost and
Ethan Banks would each take the pool in the 11th event of the day in the 50-Yard Freestyle as the veterans of the program. Yost took 4th at 1:58.44 while
Ethan Banks finished sixth at 2:06.93. Kirby would swim in the 200 Fly and 200 Individual Medley to end the night with times of 2:12.27 and 2:22.19 respectively as he ended out the night.
The Wheeling University Men's Swimming team returns to action on Thursday, November 16th, for day one of the Malone Mid-season meet.
