Wheeling, W. Va. - After a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Wheeling University Athletic Department has announced the return of the Wheeling University Athletics Hall of Fame on Monday. Nominations for the Class of 2024 are now open and run through January 1st, 2024, at 11:59 PM. The athletic department strives to recognize the rich tradition of Wheeling University Athletics, and those who have helped contribute to the success of the department.
"We are very excited to bring back the Wheeling University Athletics Hall of Fame for the class of 2024," said Wheeling University Sports Information Director Zack Zeigler. "Cardinal's Athletics has a rich history of success right here in the valley and several players, coaches, and special contributors have brought on that tradition. We want to be able to do our part by recognizing these deserving men and women for all their hard work and all they have given to the Wheeling University Athletic Community."

Nominees can include former Athletes, Coaches, and Special Contributors to Wheeling Athletics according to the Wheeling Hall of Fame bylaws. Athletes must have exhausted their athletic eligibility five years prior to being eligible and must have achieved athletic excellence in one or more Wheeling University Athletic programs over a period of at least two (2) years and must have displayed good moral character. Coaches must be of outstanding moral character and have teams or athletes that have achieved exceptional success, active coaches are not eligible for Hall of Fame Nomination except in special circumstances. Special Contributors must have made outstanding contributions to Wheeling University and must be of significant importance over several years. Once the nomination period has ended, all nominees will be voted upon by the Hall of Fame Board, comprised of nine members. Nominees are selected through a majority vote, with all members of the voting board receiving voting rights. After voting, all inductees will be notified and given the chance to accept the nomination, with the official list of inductees being announced at a date to be determined by the board. A Formal Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will then take place in the Fall of 2024, with all inductees present to receive a gift from the university and be presented in front of friends, family, and their peers.
