Box Score 2 Morgantown, W. Va. -After opening the 2023 West Virginia State games on Friday, the Wheeling University Men's and Women's swim teams were back at it on day two of the event. The Cardinals competed in several individual swims on the day as both finished 6th in their fields to round out the event. It was a strong start to the season for the Cardinals swim teams as a push through the opening month of October.
The Cardinals best finish came in their first showing of the day as Junior Jade Miller took the pool for the 200 yard backstroke. After winning the event at the Mountain East Conference (MEC)/Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Championships last season, Miller had a strong swim to start her year finishing 12th in the field. She competed among some of the best swimmers in the event across the region and was able to hold her own in the pool. Up next for the women was Chelsea McIntosh, who swam in the 100-Freestyle and posted a time of 1:05.65, posting her best time of the weekend. Sophia Castillo followed her in the 100-Yard Freestyle and posted a time of 1:01.11 as the short yardage swimmers took center stage early. She was joined by Maria Jones (1:05.85) and Caitlin Oltman (57.74) as the short yardage events took center stage early.
Miller kept it going for the women in the 100-Fly with a time of 1:02.49 as she continued her success. Olivia Moyer (1:07.06) and Marra Johnson (1:09.63) followed her up in each of their first events of the night as they rounded out the event as they rounded out the day for the women.
The biggest event for the men came in the 200-Meter Individual Medley, with three different Cardinals competing. Leading the way was freshman
Patrick Kirby, who swam the event in 2:07.29, while
Alex Ferebee (2:37.41) and
Jiwh Santos (2:05.02) each competed in the event. It was the first of two events for both Ferebee and Santos, with each also swimming in the 200-Yard Breaststroke. Santos led the way, swimming a 2:24.32 while Ferebee swam a 2:43.64.
The final two swimmers for the Cardinals were
Alberto Konfinke and
Nathan Yost, with each competing in one event. Kofinke started the day out in the 200-Yard Backstroke, swimming a 2:27.24. Yost would swim a few events later as he finishes off his tournament with the 100-Yard Fly. Yost broke the one-minute mark, swimming a 56.35 to round out the day.
The Wheeling University Men's and Women's Swimming teams return to action on Saturday, October 14th, when they host Frostburg State and West Virginia Wesleyan at 1 PM.
