Volleyball Picks up Friday Night Sweep Against Charleston

Wheeling, W. Va. – It was a big match for the Wheeling University Volleyball team (19-6, 10-1) as they welcomed in the University of the Charleston. Wheeling took care of business with a 3-0 win as the offense  put together one of their top hitting performances of the season. They hit .392 as a team, marking the sixth time this season that the Cardinals had a .300 or better hitting percentage this season.

The first set of the night was back and forth as the two teams traded the first 16 points of the set. The lead changed hands three times during the run and the score sat at 8-8. The Cardinals went on a 5-1 run that began with a service error from the Golden Eagles. Katie Wilking and Tylah Yeomans each picked up a kill during the run as the Cardinals took a 13-9 lead. After Wheeling pushed their lead to 14-10, the Cardinals went on their second run of the night as they put up five straight points to extend their lead to 19-11. That would be the run that secured the first set as a Riley Kindall kill would set up set point for the Cardinals at 24-15. The Cardinals would then clinch the set on a Golden Eagle attack error and the Cardinals would win 25-15.

The Cardinals would take a 1-0 lead in the match and looked to use their momentum to propel them into set two. Riley Kindall would step into the server's box and knocked down the first kill of the set. She would stay in that same box for the next six points as Wheeling got themselves out to a 6-0 lead with three different Cardinals earning kills during the run. The Cardinals continued to move the ball around throughout the set, with Yeomans, Wilking, Kindall, and Karly Niesen all picked up kills as Wheeling built their lead to 10-4. After Charleston got into double digits to make it 18-10, the Cardinals would ride the wave of success the rest of the way. They scored the final seven points of the match as Yeomans served their way to victory As they went on to win 25-10.

With two wins already under their belt, the Cardinals looked to continue their success into set three. Like the second set, The Cardinals would go on another run to start set 3 scoring the first five points. A second 5-0 run a few points later would have the Cardinals out in front 11-2 as they looked to close out the sweep. After going ahead by as much as 15-4, Charleston started the battle back as they looked to stay alive and keep the match going. They got as close as 18-12 before the Cardinals defense locked things up. A Yeoman's kill got things going back in the Cardinals direction, and a Josie Schroeder kill and a Charleston attack error would set up match point at 24-17. The Gold Eagles would add one more point in the set before Katie Wilking knock down the final kill to give Wheeling the 25-18 win.

Wheeling's offense would lead the way as they hit a combined .392 on the evening, the 6th time this season that the Cardinals have had a .300 hitting percentage or better. Leading the way was senior Tylah Yeomans, to finished with 13 kills and a .444 hitting percentage. Mady Winters was right behind her with 12 kills on the night and set a new career high with an .857 hitting percentage. It was the third highest hitting percentage in a single match in program history has she continues to be a strong force in the middle of the net. Karly Niesen let that offensive attack with 40 assists on the night while also adding nine digs on the defensive side. Leaving the defense was junior Riley Kindall, who led the way with 15 digs while Melia Gorrell (12) and Tylah Yeomans (10) each added double digit digs.

 The Wheeling University Volleyball team Returns to action on Tuesday, October 31st, when they host Frostburg State with tip off at 7 PM.
