Frostburg, MD. – The road to the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Tournament is on and the Wheeling University Women's Soccer team (5-9-2, 2-8-2) hit the road to face Frostburg State. The Cardinal defense did a good job of holding the highly potent Bobcat offense at bay, but it wasn't enough as they fell to Frostburg State 1-0. The Cardinals got off one shot on the afternoon as they continue their trek towards the MEC Tournament.
Early on, the Bobcats took control of the time of possession, taking three shots over the first 10 minutes of play. The Cardinals defense held strong as
Olivia Kqira made the save on the first shot of the night and the back line of Ally Cook,
Tayler Wells, and
Morgan Montani forced two shots that were off target. However, the Bobcats would break through at the 10:25 mark as Frostburg State's Leah Frostburg brought the ball up the field. She was able to find the back of the net as Frostburg State took a 1-0 lead. After allowing the initial goal, Kqira came back strong with three saves over the next eight minutes to keep it a 1-0 affair. After a failed corner kick by Frostburg State, the Cardinals had their first offensive opportunity of the night.

The Cardinals would make the run up the field and found their first shot opportunity. It came from freshman
Nyah Smith who sent the ball towards the bottom left corner of the net. However, it was saved by Frostburg State's Ashley Bilger would make the save to keep it a 1-0 affair. The Cardinals would get off one more corner kick, but they would not get off a shot as Frostburg State possessed the ball for the rest of the half. Frostburg State would take four more shots during the half, but only one fell on net as Kqira made the save and the Cardinals entered the locker room trailing 1-0. The Cardinals were outshot 13-1 over the first 45 minutes of play, hit the Cardinals looked to create more opportunities on offense in the second half.

After making five saves in the first half, Kqira came out again in the second half and repeated the effort with five more saves. She finished with 10 saves on the night on 11 shots faced as the back line held off several opportunities for the Bobcats. Of their 14 shots taken in the second half, nine of those came off target as Cook, Wells, and Montani forced bad shots throughout the half. However, the Cardinals offense was unable to get a shot off during the final 45 minutes and Wheeling would fall to the Bobcats 1-0. The loss moves them to 2-8-2 in MEC play and, while their shot at being the #3 seed in the North has expired, they are still alive and well in the race for the final spot in the MEC North.

The lone Cardinal shot on the evening came courtesy of freshman
Nyah Smith. She took one shot on the night and put it on goal, but unfortunately it was saved to keep Wheeling off the board. The last time she faced off against Frostburg State,
Olivia Kqira set the new single-game saves record with 18. While she didn't hit that number on Wednesday night, she was still able to make 10 saves on 11 shots faced and held the highest scoring offense in the MEC to just one goal on the night. Her and the Cardinals defense continue to hold strong as they head through these final two regular season games.
