Cardinals Score Pair of Goals in Loss to Frostburg State

Frostburg, MD. – On Wednesday, the Wheeling University Men's Soccer team (1-12-2, 0-10-2) made the trip to Frostburg, Maryland with a week remaining in the regular season. The Cardinals scored a pair of goals on the night, but it wouldn't be enough as they fell to Frostburg State 4-2. It was the third straight game where the Cardinals scored multiple goals as the offense continues to grow in the later part of the regular season.

It was a back and forth affair throughout the night, and it would be Frostburg State that got the first opportunity. After taking the game's first shot in the eighth minute, the Bobcats would fire off three of the first four shots. Their fourth shot of the night would find the back of the net as Carlos Quintero Rivas put the Bobcats ahead 1-0. The Cardinal's shot came courtesy of Richard Afolayanka in the 11th minute and was the Cardinal's lone shot through the first 28 minutes of play. Meanwhile, Frostburg State would notch their second goal of the half in the 26th minute, when Quintero Rivas once again found the back of the net and Frostburg State took a 2-0 advantage. The Cardinals would get their offense going in the 29th minute, when Sam Clark sent a shot on net that was saved by Bobcats goalkeeper Brennan Moore.

The Cardinals would send an onslaught of shots over the next two minutes, with three corner kicks and four shots over the course of those two minutes. Clark, Afolayanka, Johannes Haugerud, and TJ Cherry each took shots during that time, with one of those landing on goal. However, it would be Quintero Rivas plaguing the Cardinals again as he completed the first half hat trick in the 32nd minute to take a 3-0 lead. The Cardinals would finally break through after drawing a Penalty inside the box to bring up a Penalty Kick opportunity. It would be Afolayanka taking the shot, and he made it past the keeper to make it a 3-1 game. Afolayanka would have one more scoring chance before the half was out, but the Cardinals would head into the locker room trailing by that same 3-1 score.

As they came out in the second half, the Cardinals were able to make adjustments, firing off seven of the first nine shots over the first 20 minutes of the second half. Three of those seven shots would land on net, but Moore remained stingy in net for Frostburg State, making all three saves. However, it was in the 73rd minute when Frostburg State got in the board. It was once again Quintero Rivas that got on the board for his fourth goal of the night as he helped lead Frostburg State to a 4-1 lead. The Cardinals would get on the board for the final time in the 82nd minute as Rocco LiTrenta got on the board. Afolayanka brought the ball up the field and sent LiTrenta on a run. He would find the back of the net and make it a 4-2 game. That would end up being the final score as Wheeling dropped the second half of tonight's doubleheader.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was Richard Afolayanka, who led the way with seven shots, three on goal, while scoring a goal and an assist. He now leads the team with three goals this season with all three of those goals coming in the last two games. The other Cardinal goal on the night came from Rocco LiTrenta, who scored his first collegiate goal in the loss. Sam Clark (3) and Johannes Haugerud (2) each got off multiple shots on the night to round out the Cardinal's offense. Austin Aaron got the start in net for the Cardinals, and would make three saves on seven shots faced to round out the night.

The Wheeling University Men's Soccer team returns to action on Sunday, October 29th, when they hit the road to face Davis & Elkins at 7 PM.
