Gold Medal Sweep Earns Women’s Swimming Third Straight Victory

Wheeling, W. Va. – After a sweep of their tri-meet on Saturday, the Wheeling University Women's Swimming team (4-1, 1-1) was back in the pool Saturday looking for the weekend sweep. They did that and much more as they took down West Virginia Tech inside the Alma Grace Natatorium with a 121-43 victory. The Cardinals picked up first place finishes in every event on the afternoon as they made it four straight meet victories dating back to West Virginia Wesleyan last weekend.

The day kicked off with the 400-Yard Medley Relay where the team of Grace Moorley, Jade Miller, Mara Johnson, and Caitlin Oltman brought home the first gold of the day with a time of 4:27.61. Then the individual events began as Miller took on the 1000 Yard Freestyle for the first time this season. She picked up the first of two wins on the day, swimming an 11:58.41 to kick things off. She would also win the 400-Yard Individual Medley later in the day with a time of 5:04.24 to round out a four gold medal weekend. Up next in the win column was Sofia Castillo who, like Miller would take home two wins.  She began her day in the 200-Yard Freestyle, winning the event with a time of 2:12.80, and finished things off with the 200-Yard Butterfly, where she swam a 2:27.33.

The final multi event winner of the day was Freshman Grace Moorley as she kicked off the short yardage events. She began with the 50-Yard Freestyle, where she swam a 27.16, and came back with another short yardage win in the 200-Yard Backstroke, as she swam a 2:23.94. The final two wins of the night came from Mara Johnson and Caitlin Oltman to round out the day. Johnson was the first of the two to pick up her victory in the 100-Yard Freestyle where she swam a time of 1:00.04. Oltman would pick up the win in the 500-Yard Freestyle where she swam a 5:42.78. The final event would be a relay as Castillo, Olivia Moyer, Elizabeth Strange, and Chelsea McIntosh swam in the 400-Yard Freestyle, where they swam a 3:47.09.

The Wheeling University Women's Swimming team returns to action on Saturday, October 28th, when they swim a road tri-meet against Chatham and Bethany.
