Four Gold Medals Highlights Wheeling Men’s Swim Saturday

Wheeling, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Men's Swimming team (3-2, 1-1) wrapped up the weekend on Saturday when they hosted West Virginia Tech inside the Alma Grace Natatorium. The Cardinals were not able to complete the weekend sweep, falling to the Golden Bears 132-66 as they finished the weekend 2-1. Despite the loss, four gold medal finishes highlighted the meet as the Cardinals continue their push to the midseason meet.

The first Cardinal win of the day came in the eighth event as Patrick Kirby took on the 50-Yard Freestyle. After picking up a pair of wins in the weekend opener, the freshman added another win to his belt, swimming the event in 22.98. It was the first of two events for the freshman, as he finished the afternoon with a third place finish in the 200-Yard Butterfly with a time of 2:12.47. The other gold medal finish came courtesy of Graduate Student Jiwh Santos, who finished the weekend with six first place efforts, four individual and two relay. He swam in the 200-Yard Backstroke and came away with a time of 2:05.09. He was also a part of the first place 400-Yard Relay team that finished with a time of 3:25.21 and ended his day with a second place finish in the 200-Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:50.28.
 
The final gold medal on the day came in the 400-Yard Individual Medley as Quintin Tayali continued his early season success. It was the longest yardage events of the season for the sophomore, and he handles the challenge picking up the win with a time of 4:42.09. Tayali would come back two events later to pick up a second place finish in the 100-Yard Freesrtyle as he returned to the short distance events. He would swim a time of 51.15 as he has finished in the top three in every event that he has swam in during his first two events. In the first event of the afternoon, the long distance swimmers took their mark as freshman Alberto Konfinke swam in the 1000-Yard Freestyle. He took home a third place finish with a time of 12:02.44.
 
Rounding out the day for the Cardinals was Nathan Yost and Ethan Banks. Yost swam in two individual events on the day for the Cardinals, swimming in the 50-Yard Freestyle and the 200-Yard Butterfly. He would take home third place in both of his swims finishing with times of 24.32 and 2:16.89 respectively. Banks would also swim in two individual events for the Cardinals, taking fifth in the 100-Yard Freestyle (57.11) and fourth in the 500-Yard Freestyle (5:44.95). The final event of the day for the Cardinals was the 400-Yard Medley Relay where Banks, Yost, Kofinke, and Alex Ferebee took third with a time of 4:10.10.
 
The Wheeling University Men's Swimming team returns to action on Saturday, October 28th, when they swim a tri-meet against Chatham and Bethany.
