Brooms on the Road: Volleyball Sweeps Weekend with win at Glenville State

Glenville, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Volleyball team (17-6, 8-1) wrapped up their weekend roadtrip as they headed to Glenville State on Saturday. It would turn out to be a weekend sweep for the Cardinals for the second straight weekend as they took down the Pioneers 3-0. Defense once again played a big role in the team's success, as they did not allow more than 17 points in any of the three sets on the night.

Early on, the Pioneers got the jump on Wheeling, scoring four of the first six points in set one to go ahead 4-2. However, a Tylah Yeomans kill would quickly flip things back to Wheeling's favor and they responses with a 6-2 run of their own as they built an 8-6 lead. It would remain a close match until Wheeling took a 10-8 lead on a Pioneer service ace. The Pioneers error would kick off a 7-0 run that opened things up and gave Wheeling an 16-8 lead in the set. Katie Wilking had two kills during the run and a Yeomans kill would round out the run. The Cardinals continued to hold their lead and went ahead 21-13 late in the set. A pair of bad sets from the Pioneers got the Cardinals going and a Wilking kill would set up match point at 24-13. An attack error by the Pioneers would end the set and the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead.

After they fell behind in set one, the Cardinals would make sure that would not happen in set two. Wilking would continue her strong day with the first kill of the set as she sent her team on a 9-2 run through the first 11 points of the set. The end of the run was ruled by Josie Schroder, who rattled off four straight kills to put the Cardinals in the driver seat. After the run, Glenville State would battle back with six of the next seven points as they made it a 10-8 set. It would be another run in the middle of the set that created more separation as the Cardinals scored 10 of the next 14 points to move it to a 20-12 Cardinal lead. Glenville State would get as close as 23-17 at the end of the set before a Pioneer Attack Error once again set up match point. It would be Riley Kindall that smacked down the final kill, and the Cardinals took a 25-17 win to lead 2-0.

The third set began with the same back and forth that was seen throughout set two, with Glenville State taking an early 4-3 lead. However, a pair of runs by the Cardinals would become the difference in the match. The first run came early as the Cardinals would go on a 7-0 run to put them ahead early. Mady Winters would start the run with a kill and added a block of her own late in the run to take a 10-4 lead. After building their lead to 12-8 in the midway point of the set, Wheeling would hit their second major run of the set, scoring nine of the next 11 points. Wilking had four kills during that run as she led the Cardinals and they would set up match point a few points later when they went ahead 24-13. Winters would slam down the final kill as Wheeling won 25-13 and took the match 3-0.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was Tylah Yeomans who finished with 10 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Yeomans continues to be a leader not only for the Cardinals but for the conference as well as she leads the way with 291 for the season. Right behind her was Freshman Katie Wilking, who knocked down nine kills in the win. Karly Niesen led the offense with 32 assists on the day and, while the Cardinals did not hit the .300 hitting percentage mark, they finished at .244 for the night. The defense was led by Berit Jones, who finished with 14 digs as one of three double digit diggers on the day. Riley Kindall and Melia Gorrell would also finish with double digit digs with 11 and 10 respectively.

The Wheeling University Volleyball team returns to action on Tuesday, October 24th, when they host Fairmont State at 7 PM.
