Washington, PA. – Last weekend, the Wheeling University Men's Swimming team (3-1, 1-1) made history with their first-ever Mountain East Conference (MEC) win. On Friday night, the team continued their historic run as they swept their tri-meet, beating Washington & Jefferson 138-114 and taking down Allegheny 126-75. It was the first tri-meet sweep for the team since October 25th, 2014 when they swept CAL-U and Notre Dame College.
Nearly half of the team's first place finishes on the night came from Graduate Student
Jiwh Santos, who won three individual events of the night. Santos swam in the short-yardage events throughout the night, and kicked things off with the 50-Yard Backstroke. He would take home his first gold medal of the day with a time of 25.53 as he beat out the second place swimmer by just over a minute. He would return to the pool for the 50-Yard Freestyle as he took home his second gold medal with a time of 22.64. The day rounded out with his longest event of the night as he swam in the 100-Yard Individual Medley. He swam a 55.70 to round out his individual gold medals, but added a fourth as the opening leg of the Cardinals 200-Yard Medley Relay when he,
Nathan Yost,
Patrick Kirby, and
Quintin Tayali swam a 1:42.61.
The other multi-event winner for the Cardinals was also a part of that 200-Yard Medley Relay in
Quintin Tayali. After making his debut in the short yardage events last week, Tayali would once again swim in short yardage as he kicked off the day in the 100-Yard Butterfly. He swam a time of 54.44 and got his day started off strong. His final race would be the 100-Yard Freestyle six events later and he would win the event for the second week in a row. Tayali swam a 49.87 as he set a new PR in the event by just about five seconds. The final multi-event winner on the night was
Patrick Kirby who picked up a win in a pair of long distance events. First up was the 1000 Yard Freestyle, which he won with a time of 11:04.27, and he rounded out the day with a win in the 500-Yard Freestyle, with a time of 5:21.33.
The final three swimmers for the Cardinals were
Nathan Yost,
Ethan Banks, and
Alex Ferebee, who picked up several top three finishes on the day. Yost led the trio, finishing with a pair of second place finishes in the 200-Yard Freestyle (1:58.05) and the 100-Yard Butterfly (59.67).
