Wheeling, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Volleyball team (15-6, 7-1) took a break from Mountain East Conference (MEC) play on Tuesday as they hosted Shepherd inside the Alma Grace McDonough Center. It was a clean sweep for the Cardinals as they defeated Shepherd 3-0. A double-double from junior
Riley Kindall paced the Cardinals as they moved to 7-2 in Atlantic Regional play.
The first set was the most competitive of the night and, after Shepherd got the first point, Wheeling would go on to build a 7-4 lead. Wheeling would hit their first big run of the night two points later as a kill by Kindall would send Wheeling on a 4-0 run that made it an 11-6 match. As they did early in the set, Shepherd would make it an11-10 match and kept it close throughout. The Cardinals would hold the late set advantage at 20-17 and were looking to separate themselves. A service error would get the ball back on the Cardinal's side and Kindall answered with a service ace. Wheeling would score five of the final six points of the set, and
Tylah Yeomans knocked down the final kill as the Cardinals went on to win the set 25-18. The Cardinals were staked to a 1-0 lead and looked to ride the momentum into the second set.
The second set began with an identical score to set one as the Cardinals found themselves ahead 7-4. After the teams traded the next two points, Kindall knocked down a kill that gave Wheeling back the ball and sent them on a 5-0 run.
Tylah Yeomans and
Katie Wilking each knocked down kills on the run and the Cardinals were staked to a 13-5 lead. Shepherd battled back to make it a 15-9 set six points later before the Cardinals hit their second run of the set. It was the first of two 4-0 runs late in the set and the Cardinals would build a 24-13 lead by sets end. Shepherd stayed alive with back-to-back points caused a Wheeling timeout. They would come back with a Yeomans kill and the Cardinals would go on to win the set 25-15 as they took a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set saw the Cardinals wrap things up with a pair of long runs as they pulled away from the Rams. After trading the first eight points of the set, the Cardinals would hit their first big run of the night as they scored nine straight points to go ahead 13-4. During the run, four different Cardinals knocked down kills with Yeomans leading the way with two kills. Shepherd would continue to fight getting as close as 15-7 before the Cardinals would hit their second big run of the set. This time, it was an 8-1 run that made it a 23-8 set in favor of the Cardinals. Kindall would serve for five of those eight points and added two kills of her own doing the run. Shepherd would score two more points in the set, but Wheeling would get kills from Yeomans and
Mady Winters close out 25-10 set win and the 3-0 match win.

Riley Kindall, You picked up a double double with 10 kills and 14 digs on the night. It was the 9th double double of the season for Kindall As she continues to succeed on both sides of the ball. The waiting attacker for the Cardinals on the night was
Tylah Yeomans, We finished with 14 kills while hitting .306 on the night.
Karly Niesen let the offense with 35 assists on the night and helped Wheeling to a team hitting percentage of .307. On a defensive side, Kindall and
Chylyn Pate Tide for the team lead with 14 digs on the night while
Melia Gorrell added 11 digs to round out the day.
The Wheeling University Volleyball team return to action on Friday, October 20th, when they hit the road to face Concord with tip off at 7 PM.
