Wheeling, W. Va. – Wheeling University Women's Volleyball (14-6, 6-1) took on Davis and Elkins Saturday afternoon where they were able to win in three sets and improve to 14-6 on the season and 6-1 in the MEC.
The first set was close at first with it being 6-6 at the start of the set and 14-11 Wheeling at the midway point. After a kill by
Riley Kindall, they were able to lock it down on defense and really have some fantastic serving. They were able to finish the set winning 25-14 and the match would finish by a service ace for
Kailey Watkins.
Kailey Watkins and
Josie Schroder were a big reason for Wheeling winning the second set as Watkins  was able to get multiple service aces and Schroeder had multiple kills which were really big especially early in the set where they were able to settle things down and have a big lead to start. They won 25-11 on a kill by
Riley Kindall that put them ahead 2-0. The theme for the three sets was that Wheeling was able to play a team game with forty kills in three sets.
The third set was a masterclass by
Melia Gorrell who took over serving when it was 4-2 Wheeling and she would go on two serve for eight unanswered points which helped them get out to a big ten-point lead. Spreading the ball around was huge during this 8-0 run and of the eight points three different players had kills
Chaney Brodbeck,
Lindsey James, and
Shelby James.
This team win was big and it showcases how hard
Christy Benner has these girls working in practice and how well this group works together and that was showcased with the forty kills and thirty-nine assists. The leaders in kills for this game were
Aly Finch and
Katie Wilking who both had five and Riley Kind who had four,
Kailey Watkins led in aces with four, and
Riley Kindall had one along with
Melia Gorrell who also had one. Karly Neison had a huge game with twenty assists,
Giana Frayer with 12, and
Melia Gorrell with six.
