Frostburg, MD. – As the Wheeling University Women's Swimming team gets ready for the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Championship run, they got the chance to face two of their conference opponents on Saturday. They took on Frostburg State and West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday in tri meet action and had a big individual showing on the day. The Cardinals took home gold medal finishes in five races on the day, with three different Cardinals earning those five wins.
Leading the way for Wheeling was freshman
Marra Johnson and sophomore
Jade Miller, who each finished with two wins on the night. Of the two swimmers, it would be Miller who brought home the first gold of the night in the 200 Short Course Meter Freestyle. She beat out a field of seven different swimmers, including teammate
Caitlin Oltman, swimming a 2:20.23 to claim the win. Her second win of the day came 12 events later in the 200 Meter Breaststroke. She once again beat out a field of seven racers, and took home the win at 2:32.55.
Marra Johnson followed behind her I'm event nine, the 100 Meter Breaststroke, with her first win of the day. She would beat out seven swimmers and posted a time of 1:22.20 to get her first win of the weekend. She would also pick up a win in the 200 Meter Breaststroke, swimming a time of 2:58.25 to round out her day.
The final win for the Cardinals came courtesy of freshman
Gabby Baiano in the 800-Meter Freestyle. Baiano has been a strong distance swimmer for the Cardinals this season, and once again showed her chops in the distance events. She would beat out six other swimmers in the field with a time of 9:56.32 to pick up her second win of the weekend. To go along with her two wins, Baiano also picked up two silver medals along the way in the 400 Meter Freestyle and the 200 Meter Individual Medley. She swam times of 4:49.91 and 2:45.52 respectively to round out a strong start to the 2023 portion of the schedule for the freshman.
Caitlin Oltman picked up two second place finishes on Friday and added three more second place finishes in Saturday. They came in the 50 Free (30.19), 100 Free (1:06.29), and the 200 Free (2:20.73) to round out a consistent weekend.
The other three Cardinals to take the pool on the day were sophomores
Maria Jones and
Elizabeth Strange as well as freshman
Olivia Moyer. All three would also compete in three different events on the day as they continued to get their work in. Jones's best finish came in her first event of the day as she joined Baiano for the 800 Meter Freestyle. The sophomore finished fourth in the field with a time of 12:00.14 as she continues to swim in more and more distance events. Strange took home sixth place in all three of her events on the day swimming in the 100 Backstroke (1:28.78), 200 Backstroke (3:01.22), and the 100 Butterfly (1:29.66) as she continues to improve. Moyer, who swam in her second event as a Cardinal, rounded out the day in the 100 Butterfly (4th / 1:17.85), 50 Freestyle (7th / 32.20), and 100 Breaststroke (4th / 1:29.68).
The Wheeling University Women's Swimming team returns to the pool on Saturday, January 21st, when they host Fairmont State with the first events beginning at 1 PM.
