Wheeling, W. Va. – It was a record setting night at Bishop Schmitt Field on Wednesday when the Wheeling University Women's Soccer team (4-5, 4-3). Goalkeeper
Mikayla Yarwood finished with seven saves and is now Wheeling's All-Time career saves leader with 220. Unfortunately, the Cardinals were unable to pull off the win for their keeper as they fell to the Falcons 3-0.
Yarwood ended up facing 10 shots on the night and made seven saves for a .700 save percentage. She breaks an 18-year record, surpassing former Cardinals Goalkeeper Tina Dengler ('04) who finished with 219 saves in her career.
For Yarwood, she began her Wheeling career back in 2018 and had just two saves as a freshman. During her senior season, she came within striking distance of the mark when she led NCAA Division II with 132 saves. Coming into this year, she needed just 58 saves to tie the record and save #59 came in the second half of tonight's game. On the offensive side of the ball,
Braedynn Porter led the group with five shots, two on goal, and
Mary DiFonzo added three shots on goal.
In the first half, Yarwood faced plenty of action as she made six of her seven saves in the half, tying the Wheeling Women's Soccer all-time career saves record. The ball spent a lot of time in the Falcons offensive zone and Yarwood went to work right away. She saved her first shot three and a half minutes into the game and seven minutes later Notre Dame was in the board with a 1-0 lead. Yarwood would get save number two in the 16th minute, but two failed Cardinals shots kept it a 1-0 affair. The shots became more balanced halfway through the set, but Notre Dame would get back in the board in the 39th minute to make it 2-0. The record tying save would come in the 40th minute when she knocked awar a Falcon shot and sent the teams into halftime with Wheeling trailing 2-0.
As the second half began, the momentum began to swung the Cardinals way. They got off the first six shots of the second half, putting one of those on net, but they just couldn't find the back of the net. The save that gave Yarwood the career save srecird came in the game's 55th minute. After a pair of Wheeling Yellow Cards were handed out, Notre Dame was set up with a free kick at the 20 yards line and sent it towards the net. Yarwood was able to jump up and punch the ball over the net and keep it a 2-0 affair. Yarwood was pulled with 14 minutes left in the game and ended a strong showing. Notre Dame added one more goal in the 89th minute that brought the game to its final score of 3-0. The Cardinals four-game win streak comes to an end, but they look to start a new one on Sunday.
The Wheeling University Women's Soccer team returns to action on Sunday, October 2nd, when they host West Virginia State at 2 PM.
