Men’s Soccer Looks for Second Straight Home Victory

Wheeling, W. Va - Wheeling University Men's Soccer (3-4-1, 3-2-1) got back on track Wednesday evening after defeating local rival West Liberty University. The Cardinals look to carry their momentum and pick up a consecutive win at Bishop Schmitt Field against the University of Charleston, Saturday evening at 7 PM.

West Liberty versus Wheeling University always provides sparks and excitement no matter the sport but especially in soccer. The eighth meeting all-time between the two programs yet again did not fail spectators. The Cardinals were able to dominate, scoring a season high five goals while also holding the Hilltopers to zero. This was Wheeling's third shut out of the season.

Throughout the first twenty minutes no team was able to get on the board. Both teams were able to get shots at the goal but were unable to land them inside the net. That changed in the 26th minute when Wheeling's Christian Ruud kicked the ball in. Following that goal, the Cardinal's offense caught fire all the way into the 48th minute. Salem Mwelwa, Miguel Martin, and Adam Edvinsson all contributed to the score, bringing it to 4-0. Diego Buenano assisted Edvinsson on the fourth goal of the evening.

The Cardinals finished the game with one final goal from Andrew Bell in the 74th minute. Bell was assisted by Hamza Memon. Overall this secured Wheeling's third win of the season and first at home. The Cardinals look to carry the momentum into their next game against the University of Charleston.

As it stands, Wheeling University is currently fourth in the Mountain East Conference standings. The Cardinals are only three games behind third place team, Notre Dame College. As the season approaches October, it is important that the Cardinals continue to win matchups within the conference.

The Matchup

Saturday will be the 36th all time matchup between Wheeling University and the University of Charleston. Dating back to 2002, the Golden Eagles have gotten the best of the Cardinals, leading the series 24-10-2. Wheeling's most success came during 2005-2008 where the Cardinals were able to win five straight games.

The last time these two met was in October of 2021, where the Golden Eagles won 5-1. Wheeling's Harry Martin was able to score their lone goal of the evening. The Cardinals look to turn around their fourntes this year and earn another conference victory.
