Wheeling, W. Va. – After a big road win last time out, the Wheeling University Women's Soccer team (2-4, 2-2) brought the momentum back home with them when they hosted Alderson Broaddus on Sunday. The Cardinals got a big game from
Medina Doka as she scored two goals to lead Wheeling to a 5-3 win. They were the first two goals of Doka's career as she notched both the game tying and game winning goals in what was an offensive affair.
It was an offensive game right from the get-go and Wheeling controlled the ball early and often.
Talynn DeBartolo and
Landree Wilkin each got off shots on the game's first two minutes and the Cardinals ended up taking the first four shots of the game. However, Alderson Broaddus's patience would end up paying off as they scored the first goal of the game at the 12 minute mark to take a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals just kept shooting and
Kenadee Burgoyne would get her team on the board with a goal in the 30th minute to tie the game at 1-1. It was her team leading third goal of the season as the Cardinals were rewarded for all their shots taken.
The Cardinals continued to control the possession game in the first half, outshooting the Battlers 14-8 in the first half. Nine minutes later, Wheeling would take their first lead of the night as
Mary DiFonzo found the back of the net for her first goal of the net to make it a 2-1 game. With the lead in hand, the Cardinals were trying to hold the lead and ride out the half but Alderson Broaddus had other ideas. They got on the board in the 44th minute with just 23 seconds left before half and tied the game at 2-2. That was where the half would end and Wheeling headed to the locker room looking for a way to get back out in front in the second half. After a Battler goal in the 61st minute made it a 3-1 game, Wheeling would go on the attack as Doka took control.
In the game's 64th minute, the Wheeling defense shot the ball up the middle of the field to Doka. The freshman made two moves around defenders and got inside the 18-yard box. She let it rip towards the net and sailed it into the upper right corner to tie the game at 3-3. The score would remain tied for the next 17 minutes before a foul was called on Doka in the 78th minute. She fought for the ball and was able to get it back and take it up field. She used another nice move at the 15-yard line to get around her defender and ripped another shot towards next. It hit the bottom right corner for her second goal of the day and the Cardinals would take a 4-3 lead. The first two goals of her career couldn't have come at a better time and gave Wheeling the lead for good. DiFonzo would add her second goal of the day in the 88th minute and Wheeling went on to win 5-3.
It was a big day for Doka as she scored two goals on three shots, putting all three of those shots on goal.
Mary DiFonzo led the Cardinals offense with six total shots, putting four in net, and added two goals of her own.
Kenadee Burgoyne was Wheeling's third goal scorer of the day, taking seven shots, three on net, while scoring a goal.
Mikayla Yarwood got the start in net and made five saves on eight shots faced and now needs just 10 more saves to break the all-time career saves record of 219.
The Wheeling University Women's Soccer team returns home on Wednesday, September 21st when they host West Liberty with kick-off scheduled for 5 PM.
